Introduction to Burrowhayes Farm Caravan, Camping & Riding Stables

This family-run campsite is situated within Exmoor National Park. We chose to visit to enjoy a good circular walk in the adjacent Horner Woods, on the River Horner (also known as Horner Water), something we had promised ourselves for a long time.

We crossed an old packhorse bridge at the start of our walk and climbed high above the river to enjoy some lovely views and also simply enjoy being among the trees. Despite visiting in June, we only met two people on our walk, which was wonderful. Fern, our Labrador, had a wonderful time and hardly lifted up her nose!

There was plenty of room and we enjoyed an end pitch alongside Horner Water. We thought it was lovely to sit outside and listen to the flowing water in the evening, after a good walk.

What the campsite has to offer

The campsite itself is very well run with great facilities and has an adjoining riding stables. Escorted rides are offered to those with an experience of riding or children can be led on horseback by their parents through the woodland. We didn’t use the riding facility, but thought that horseback would be a great way to explore Exmoor.

Burrowhayes Farm also has static caravans for hire, which would be great to accommodate family or friends without their own motorhome. Some of the pitches have 16A electric hook-up available and there are heated toilets and showers, a laundry room and an on-site shop.

There are loads of walks directly from Burrowhayes Farm and we decided to walk into Porlock for a meal one evening. The walk took us about 20 minutes.

There are several places to eat in Porlock, including three pubs. There are also shops and, of course, Porlock Weir, a pretty little harbour where fishing trips can be taken, or children would likely enjoy crabbing when the tide is right.
