The best campsites for a holiday with your four-legged friend

This award-winning, open-all-year campsite is set among the hills of north Devon with adjacent woodland – perfect for dog walking. The site has a five-acre overflow field that, when empty, can be used for a good run, and the on site shop stocks tennis balls in case your dog forgets to pack theirs. Hidden Valley has a lakeside restaurant and coffee shop where dogs are welcome, and a handy patio and lawn seating area for enjoying good weather. The River Cain runs through the park so dogs can take a cooling dip in warm weather and most of the local beaches have sections that are dog friendly. Pitches at Hidden Valley have electric hook-up, water tap and TV connection. The large and Premier pitches also have fresh and grey water connections. The facilities are first rate.

Ideally situated for exploring the Llyn Peninsula and Snowdonia, Garreg Goch Caravan Park near Porthmadog is just a 10-minute walk from Black Rock Sands. This superb sandy beach welcomes dogs year round. There’s also plenty of coast and country walking and plenty of dog-friendly attractions. These include the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway, Criccieth Castle and many of the shops in Betws-y-Coed. Pets stay free on the site’s touring pitches, all with electric hook-up, mains drains water and free WiFi. On-site facilities include a shower block, water points, toilets, play area, laundry and shop.

This site offers direct access to sandy dunes and the delights of Gwithian Beach, which is a long stretch of sand bordered by dunes and cliffs. Dogs are allowed at Gwithian between October and Easter and other beaches in the area welcome dogs all year round, so there’s plenty of walking delights for your canine companion. Upton Towans, near Hayle, is one such beach as is Mexico Towans. Both these beaches form part of a glorious four miles of sand (some parts of this stretch do have dog restrictions). There are also plenty of countryside walks to enjoy direct from the park. Pitches at Atlantic Coast are situated in a sheltered area and are fully serviced with hook-ups. There’s a toilet and shower block, and shop on site, offering fresh bread, croissants and Cornish pasties of course!

Located in the picturesque countryside and just a short drive from a number of dog-friendly beaches, Heligan Caravan and Camping Park is perfect for all the family. With a number of coastal and inland walking paths, you’ll be sure to have hours of fun! Perched above Mevagissey Bay, this five star park offers you all the peace and tranquillity you could wish for – you’ll be just a step away from losing yourself in acres of magnificent woodland and world-famous gardens. Bring your tent, motorhome or caravan and you’ll have a choice of pitches to suit all your needs – from grass to hardstanding gravel pitches, as well as use of their brand new amenity block, complete with a laundrette, drying room and dog shower! Alternatively, experience a taste of camping at its most luxurious by staying in one of their deluxe holiday homes.

Perched on a clifftop, with magnificent views of the coast, Whitby Holiday Park is set amidst peaceful footpaths, golden beaches and beautiful countryside. There’s access to the beach from the site, so dogs can go for a paddle, and you can walk to historic Whitby Abbey from the site and on into the seaside resort itself. National Trust owned Saltwick Bay and the Cleveland Way Coastal Path are both accessible direct from the park, making it the perfect retreat for walkers, nature lovers… and pets! The clifftop touring area has grass pitches – there’s also several hardstanding pitches for larger motorhomes. All pitches are supplied with electric and have access to park facilities, including WiFi, a shop, café, a club with family entertainment, playground, amusements and a laundry.

Winner of the 2020 Practical Caravan Best Adult Only and Best Regional Park awards, Old Oaks is a first-class adults only touring park with an extensive list of dog-friendly offerings including a secure 300-metre dog exercise area with poo bag dispenser en route, a warm water dog shower (with shampoo), a dedicated doggie washing machine/dryer for dog bedding, and a range of dog supplies in the shop. In addition to this the park has several ‘dog stops’ where you can securely park your little mate while you go about your business, plus all of its glamping accommodation also welcome dogs. There are lots of dog-friendly places to eat and drink in the area as well as dog-friendly walks. Plenty of footpaths can be accessed directly from the site, including one to Glastonbury Tor.

This is a family-run park set in 33 acres of parkland and surrounded by fields. Because of the parkland location, it is perfect for walking and the Tarka Trail can be accessed directly from the site. The camping and touring pitches are set in the grounds of the old manor house. There are a variety of pitches available, with hook-ups, some are fully serviced and some en-suite with their own facilities in a cedar cabin. Tents can be pitched in the Old Walled Garden which provides shelter and easy access to the outdoor pool. Three camping pods and three timber lodges are also available to hire. On site are new heated amenities, a laundry, shop, bar (seasonal), games room, play area and dog exercise paddock. WiFi is available throughout the park. Attractions in the area include some great sandy beaches, the pretty village of Clovelly, zoos and farm parks ... the list is endless!
