Strawberry Hill Farm

cf3ffd05-3065-40c0-b7b2-65d3496324af
Offering convenient access from the A1. Exit at junction 61 and the site is about four miles away. For full directional details visit their web site from the link on this page.

Once you get on site you'll find a pleasant family-run site set amidst rolling countryside with many of the pitches offering great views over the surrounding fields overlooking Durham Vale.

There's plenty of wildlife to be found here, too, with the site owners  reporting that they have seen rare butterflys here, including the Northern Brown Argus and the Burnet moth (which has attractive red-spotted wings). You may occasionally see the odd barn owl on site, together with a flock of resident partridges.

If you can tear yourself away from the wildlife, you're sure to appreciate the on-site toilet block, which features free showers, shaver points and a fully contained bathroom for disabled visitors. There's also a laundry room offering a washing machine, tumble dryer and spin dryer, as well as ironing facilities and hairdryers.

The reception area also doubles as the shop and offers basic grocery supplies, including barbecue supplies. An ice pack freezing service is also offered and Calor gas exchange bottles are available. Dogs are welcome and there's an info cabin stocked with tourist leaflets.

There's a wealth of tourist activities in the area, including Hartlepool Quay (12 miles away) a recreation of an 18th century seaport and home to HMS Trincomalee, said to be the oldest ship afloat in the UK. To get in touch with the working class roots of the region, head to the Beamish Museum, where you'll find an open-air museum set in 300 acres of countryside.

Shopaholics will be happy to note that the Metro Centre is located just 17 miles from the site and offers a great retail therapy fix. It has plenty of parking, even for larger vehicles. The stunning Angel of the North is 16 miles away, while walkers should head to Hadrian's Wall (which is 25 miles away).

Raby Castle can be found just 18 miles away and is said to be one of the largest English medieval castles. It's set in front of a lake and features all manner of towers, turrets and walls in a mixture of styles.

The site is set on a section of the A181 known as Silent Bank (or possibly 'Signing Bank') and various theories on the origin of the name abound eg it's possible pilgrims crossed themselves here on the way to Durham Cathedral in medieval times.

Whatever the origin of the campsite name today, it's a pleasant part of the world. Modern pilgrims will be pleased to note that 0.7-mile away from the site is the Three Horse Shoes pub, with the Shadforth Plough, Seven Stars and Rose Tree public houses being a short drive away.
