Electric bikes for camping adventures

e61d7179-7ce2-4263-9810-9391c1dc26df

Having become increasingly popular in recent years, electric bikes, or e-bikes, are having a bit of a moment, offering an eco-friendly way to get about on longer trips where you might otherwise be tempted to jump in the motor

If you thought e-bikes were heavy, cumbersome items – not ideal for taking on a camping trip, perhaps, where space and weight capacities are limited – think again. With lightweight, folding, off-road and city riding options available – and manufacturers putting a real focus on weight and range capabilities – there really is an electric bike for everyone.

And, for tent, caravan, motorhome, campervan and park home owners, there’s surely no better way to explore miles and miles of the great outdoors than with a bit of battery assistance, giving you a handy little boost when your own energy starts to flag.

Want to learn more about electric bikes before you take the plunge? Check out our ultimate guide to electric bikes here.

With a huge choice of electric bikes on the market, it can be difficult to know where to start, so we've put together this e-bike round-up to give you an idea of what's available...

Trek FX+ 2 Stagger Electric Bike

Weighing in at around 18kg, this is a lightweight city bike with an easy step-through frame that, according to Trek, is “designed to make everyday excursions faster and more fun”. Kitted out with a rear rack, mudguards and lights, the 250Wh battery will give you assistance for up to 35 miles, with the option to double your range with an extra ‘plug-and-play’ battery.

Eskute Star Electric City Folding Bike

Opt for the mint green version of the Star and no one will miss you on the campsite (it’s available in black if you prefer to be a little more incognito on your holidays). The 900Wh battery will see you travel up to 74 miles on a single charge, and the shock-absorbing bike seat, adjustable front suspension and 20in by 4in ‘fat’ tyres will ensure a comfortable ride. It weighs 33.5kg so just be mindful of that if you have payload to consider.

This 16in 806 Folding Electric Bike offers three battery options: 375Wh (up to 50 miles), 575Wh (75 miles) and 700Wh (90 miles), weighing from 21kg to 22.5kg. We had great fun testing out the 700Wh option, which folds down easily with a simple locking hinge mechanism, and has loads of great features, including a backlit LCD display, seven-speed Shimano gears, front and rear lighting, a handy rear rack for luggage and a super-soft Wisper Comfort saddle.

Pendleton Somerby Electric Bike

We love the classic, upright styling of this electric Pendleton Somerby – and you can even accessorise with a wicker-style front basket (for an extra £45) so you can really look the part when cruising the English countryside on a warm summer’s day! But this is traditional cycling with a modern twist, thanks to its 250W motor in the rear hub and rack-mounted removable battery. Available in either a 17in or 19in frame, the Somerby weighs in at 22kg and its 317Wh battery delivers a maximum 50-mile range.

Ecovolt Morning

The Ecovolt Morning is the most compact offering from this Lyon-based manufacturer. Weighing just 16.5kg, this 16in bike folds down to a relatively dinky 75cm by 58cm by 42cm, so it won’t take up masses of space – or payload – in your car or campervan. Powered by a 250W motor and 36V lithium battery, it offers five levels of battery assistance and a range of up to 31 miles.

Redesigned in 2022, Raleigh says its five-model Motus line-up is the “electric hybrid for everyday life” offering “sophisticated tech at an affordable price”, and it’s the Motus Tour we’re looking at here, weighing in at 28kg for the low step version. With a powerful 500Wh Bosch battery, Bosch Intuvia display, eight-speed gears, hydraulic disc brakes, reflective tyres and an adjustable handlebar stem, this is a well-made bike from a well-known brand that’ll see you travel for up to 80 miles on a single charge.

So, what happens when a former F1 race car designer turns his hand to creating an electric bike? Meet Gocycle, founded by former McLaren design engineer, Richard Thorpe. Said to fold in under ten seconds to around 83cm by 39cm by 75cm and weighing just 17.6kg, it has a removable 300Wh battery, giving a range of up to 40 miles on a single three-hour charge, a patented CleanDrive system, MotoGP-inspired tyres, adjustable driving position, USB port for phone charging on the go, and even connects to its own very clever GocycleConnect smartphone app.

All Peddle bikes have an LCD display with Bluetooth and app integration, so you can track your speed and distance via your smartphone, while puncture-resistant and reflective tyres, pannier racks, mudguards, front and rear lights, seat suspension and gel saddles are also standard across the Peddle range. Power-wise, the Go has an integrated 36V battery and 250W motor, taking you up to 40 miles on a five-hour charge. It weighs 21kg.

Knaap AMS

If none of the bikes so far are chunky enough for you, how about this Knaap AMS? Though, weighing in at 28kg, you’ll need a pretty chunky amount of spare payload and storage space to take it on your travels, too. The Knaap might have the eye-catching look of a scooter but it is in fact an urban e-bike, with all the basics you’d expect, like seven-speed Shimano gears, LED lighting, removable battery, etc, but the cool-factor seems to be courtesy of really chunky 20in tyres, which are supposed to be ideal for going over sand and mud. The 756Wh battery features five levels of power assist and offers a maximum range of 87 miles on a four to six-hour charge.

Folding in less than 20 seconds to 64.5cm by 56.5cm by 27cm, this bike’s innovative dual-locking seat post means you can steer the folded bike by the saddle when getting from A to B. It’s super-lightweight at just 15.6kg (or 12.7kg with the battery removed), and a full four-hour charge (or two hours with a separately available SuperFast charger) will see you travel for up to 45 miles. Spec-wise, everything from the saddle to the puncture-resistant tyres has been designed to save on weight, plus you’ll find four-speed gears, a 250W motor and an accompanying Brompton Electric app.
