Holiday bookings hit record monthly high

A RECORD number of holiday bookings were made to Cumbria and the Lake District in August - and reservations for September are also on the rise, according to new figures just released.

Cumbria Tourism, which runs the official www.golakes.co.uk website, experienced its busiest ever month for bookings since it was launched in 2004, as people went online to book a stay at hotels, B&Bs, and self-catering accommodation in the county last month.

The website took £185,000 worth of business for tourism operators across Cumbria – a 42 per cent rise on August 2006, and the equivalent of securing over 5,000 bed nights for the industry.

Dozens of tourism businesses will receive an update on the tourism industry in the county at the autumn meeting of Cumbria Tourism on Thursday, 20 September at the Sellafield Visitors’ Centre from 2pm.

The statistics means the golakes website has already taken more business in the first eight months of 2007 than it did for the whole of 2006 when it achieved £1.1 million in bookings. This year’s total has already surpassed the £1.2 million mark.
