How to prepare your caravan for winter
Technical advice
Keep your caravan safe from frost damage with this essential winterisation checklist.
Thanks to efficient heating systems and year-round campsite availability, winter caravanning has grown in popularity. But whether you’re storing your caravan or planning cold-weather trips, preparing your caravan for winter is vital to avoid frost damage, damp and unnecessary repair bills.
Draining the water system
Top of the winter prep list is draining down your caravan water system.
This is crucial: even small amounts of water left in pipes or appliances can freeze, expand and cause costly splits or leaks.
Water heater:
Open the yellow drain valve (dump valve) and leave all taps open. For mixer taps, place the lever in the central position and lift to open both hot and cold pipes.
Use a drain-down kit, with a foot pump or 12V compressor (max 15 psi) to blast out any residual water.
Shower hose:
Remove any loops and let the head hang towards the tray to empty fully.
Cassette toilet:
Drain the flush tank via the dedicated pipe, or flush until empty if no pipe is present.
Always empty the cassette and leave the blade valve open to prevent sticking. Remove the cap from the emptying spout for airflow.
Tip: consider a waterless toilet chemical to prevent freezing and maintain freshness through winter.
Gas systems
You can leave gas bottles in the locker over winter, but always:
- Disconnect the regulator
- Check campsite rules if your caravan is in commercial storage – many don’t permit cylinders on site
- Store regulators and hoses indoors if possible to protect from perishing
Battery maintenance
Leisure batteries need attention throughout winter:
If at home:
Plug into the mains every few weeks or use a smart charger.
Off-grid storage:
Remove the battery and store in a dry, ventilated place.
Security systems:
If your alarm or tracker runs off the battery, ensure you monitor charge levels.
Pro tip: Install a solar trickle charger to maintain charge levels in situ.
Tyres
Tyres can develop flat spots or cracks when left in one place for months:
- Move the caravan slightly every 4-6 weeks
- Alternatively, use axle stands or winter wheels to relieve pressure
- Check pressures and condition regularly; UV-resistant tyre covers help reduce sidewall cracking
Inside the caravan
Upholstery
- Store indoors if possible
- If not, stand cushions upright to allow airflow
- Removing upholstery also deters thieves
Cleaning and ventilation
- Clean fridge with bicarbonate of soda (1 tsp in 500ml water)
- Leave fridge and freezer doors ajar to avoid mould
- Leave blinds open (if spring-loaded) to protect the mechanism; use curtains for security
Damp prevention
- Use moisture absorbers (replace every 6–8 weeks)
- Leave internal doors and lockers open to encourage airflow
- Consider an oil-filled radiator or a low-wattage heater (with thermostat) for mild background warmth in secure storage
Exterior protection
Caravan covers
- Choose a breathable, made-to-measure cover
- Avoid tarpaulins – they trap moisture and cause paint or sealant damage
- Always clean the caravan thoroughly before fitting the cover to avoid scratches from trapped grit

Security
Hitch locks and wheel clamps are standard, but:
- Add locking wheel nuts for extra deterrent
- Use visible deterrents like security stickers and window alarms
- Remove the radio faceplate and valuables
- Consider a tracker system – some insurance providers offer discounts
- Register with CRiS
Storage options
At home
Pros:
Mains power access, easy to check or move, secure if you’re vigilant.
Cons:
Security risks when both caravan and house are unattended.
Commercial sites
- Look for CaSSOA-rated storage for Gold, Silver, or Bronze-level security
- Check if your insurer offers lower premiums for verified sites
Farm storage
- Typically lower cost but security varies – inspect facilities and ask about surveillance, lighting and access
Important: Inform your insurer where your caravan is stored – incorrect details may invalidate your policy.
