Why the Outwell Moonhill 5 Air?

What makes a great tent for weekend camping trips or for touring? Well, obviously it needs to have all the essentials that are important for any other kind of camping trip, ie a reliably waterproof flysheet, robust structure, good ventilation, etc. It also needs to get the balance right between having enough usable space and being compact enough to fit in the car boot.

But the most important thing to look out for in a weekend tent is ease of pitching. If your time on the campsite is limited, you want to know that you’ll be able to have the tent pitched as speedily as possible, to give you more time to have fun.

Of course the same applies when it comes to packing away at the end of your stay, especially if you’re moving on to another stop. The Outwell Moonhill 5 Air ticks all those boxes. It is quick to put up and take down, has plenty of headroom and interior space to relax, darkened Premier bedrooms and a canopy for sheltered cooking.

We like

  • Front canopy for sheltered cooking
  • Darkened bedrooms for better sleep
  • Easy-to-operate inflate/deflate valves

Our verdict

The Hubba Hubba is a classic backpacking tent from US brand, MSR, and the Bikepack builds on that tent’s success with some cycle-friendly developments that turn it into a brilliant lightweight shelter for weekends on two wheels. The handlebar storage bag is designed to fit on any bike and has loops fitted to attach additional gear. Its compact size means it easily fits in panniers, a frame bag or a backpack.

Our verdict

Pitched in five minutes, the Classic Air 300 from Vango combines F10 A-frame tent heritage and AirBeam technology to create a unique tent that is perfect for weekend adventures when you don’t need a huge amount of living space. The tent also uses ColourLok Eco technology in the fabric manufacturing process, which increases colour retention and UV protection as well as using up to 60% less water.
