Robens Serac

Why the Robens Serac?

First and foremost, this is a really good mummy-shaped sleeping bag for backpacking. The Serac 300 weighs less than 1kg and is packed with features, such as insulated face, neck and zip baffles, insulated foot box and loft expander system, designed to keep you warm at night without adding to the load.

But there’s more to this story than just an excellent product. As part of its commitment to reducing its impact on the great outdoors, Robens has launched its Sustain initiative for 2024. This is more than just a marketing move, the company says, but a shift in thinking.

The Serac is the first sleeping bag to be included and as a result it contains responsibly sourced and traceable duck down filling, supplied by certified farms that promote animal welfare. In addition, the shell and lining are created from 100% recycled nylon, made from waste products that would otherwise find their way into landfill.

And, of course, it’s PFC free.

Thanks to the quality duck down filling it’s very compressible so has a small pack size. It also comes with a mesh sack for optimal storage, as well as being fitted with hanging loops. For more camping in colder temperatures, it’s available in two warmer fill weights. Overall, a super piece of premium camping kit.

Our verdict

Designed for camping three seasons of the year, the Riff has a trim cut design aimed at people who sleep on their sides. The bag is cut wider at the elbows and knees to allow easy movement through the night while cutting in tighter at the feet and shoulders.

It’s also a 100% recyclable product and recycled or reclaimed materials are used if they are confirmed to reduce carbon emissions.

Our verdict

At just 400g, this ultralight bag, available in the UK from outdoor specialist, Trekitt, claims to have one of the best warmth-to-weight ratios of any on the market and is aimed at campers who count every gramme.

It uses a heat-reflective fabric treatment called Thermo Ionic Lining Technology, designed to boost warmth while keeping the pack size small.
