Why the Hanwag Banks SF Extra GTX?
Our editor can be a typically dour Scot at times – he’s not generally prone to emotional outbursts. So, when he declared these “officially the comfiest walking boots I’ve ever worn”, we had to listen.
The Hanwag Banks SF Extra is aimed at the many hikers with wider feet, who often find that walking boots and shoes are simply too narrow. Sadly, for many, that means badly fitting, uncomfortable footwear that does nothing to encourage you to get active.
Hanwag’s solution is to come up with a special last, designed to provide more room at the side of the forefoot and around the big toe. The difference is amazing and that’s why we think this boot deserves top prize. In addition, the foam wedge in the midsole gives improved shock absorbency on rougher terrain.
Gore-Tex lining makes the boot fully waterproof and it is made using 100% certified nubuck leather – which is not just high quality but also complies with environmental standards.

Our verdict
Comfortable, versatile and durable, the Katabatic is a multi-use shoe that is suited to a wide range of uses. Crucially, it also passes the Camping hill and pub test – in that you can wear them walking on the trails and in the local hostelry without feeling daft. The Katabatic also provided comfort straight out of the box – so no need for ‘wearing in’.

Our verdict
These new walking shoes from US specialist, Vasque, wear their environmental credentials with pride. Are they the most recycled shoes ever made? Well, we don’t know for sure, but with recycled mesh uppers, laces and sole, they must be there or thereabouts. They’re also extremely comfortable, with plenty of cushioning and padding around the heels.
