Family of Willerby's co-founder takes VIP tour
News
As leading holiday home manufacturer, Willerby, begins a special year marking the eightieth anniversary of the business, the family of the man who founded the company has enjoyed a VIP tour of its headquarters and manufacturing facilities.
The visit reunited 92-year-old Jean Morris, the only child of Willerby’s founder, Walter Allan, with her father's legacy. Jean travelled from her home in Devon to the company’s site in Hull for the occasion and was joined by her sons, Simon and Andy, and daughter-in-law Patricia.
During the memorable visit they met Willerby colleagues, toured the facilities and stepped inside Willerby’s newest model.
Speaking of the visit, Jean said,
I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to come back to Hull and see the current Willerby site. The thing which surprises me the most is the size and scale of the operation. My father started this business as a one-man band from a small shed and it’s grown to such an impressive scale.
An 80-year legacy
In 2026 it is 80 years since Jean’s father founded the business. After moving to the Hull area from London in the early 1940s with his family, Walter Allan opened a saw mill and timber business in nearby Beverley.
But, driven by the emerging popularity of caravan holidays in the post-war period, Walter transferred his business into building caravans in 1946. The family lived in Willerby at the time, on the outskirts of Hull, hence the name for the new business.
Walter died in 1970, and with Jean having moved away from Yorkshire, she was unaware of how much the business had grown.
A chance reading of a media article in 2025 led Jean to call Willerby's head office to say her father would be proud to see how far the business he founded had come.
This gave rise to the opportunity for the Willerby team to invite Jean and her family to visit Hull, to tour Willerby’s facilities.
A family tour
As well as visiting Willerby's showground to look around the latest edition of Willerby's flagship model, The Vogue, Jean and her family also had the opportunity to meet many of Willerby’s workforce. As a company that prides itself on family values, some of Willerby's longest-serving colleagues have been with the business for over 40 years.
The memorable visit was not only special for Jean, but was also incredibly poignant for her sons, Simon and Andy, who have fond memories of their grandad from their early childhood.
Simon commented,
As a family we’re delighted that Mum has had the opportunity to see what has become of her father’s business, which started from humble beginnings and has gone through such an impressive evolution.
