From CMC comes the rather cool HemBil range, here we look at three of its key models...

Introduction

No doubt you’ll have heard of CMC (Concept Multi-Car), as it’s an established campervan converter that’s been around for donkey’s years.

It first introduced Reimo campervans and the German company’s market-leading components, including bench/bed systems and pop-top and high-top roofs, to the UK back in 1988.

The company was formed by Alf and Hilary Shortland, who are still involved, but day-to-day running of the business has now passed to sons, Sam and Toby.

Under Sam’s direction, CMC has also developed its own HemBil range alongside proven Reimo designs.

HemBil is Scandinavian (Swedish), and roughly translates as ‘home car’, so these campervans are inspired by modern Scandi design – you can expect light and airy, neutral tones and natural woods, and innovative design features that make excellent use of space, of course. The HemBil range includes the Escape, Escape-SL, Urban, Urban-S, Dune and Drift on Volkswagen, Ford and Renault base vehicles.

Importantly, CMC puts safety as a top priority. It uses the Reimo Variotech 3000 seat system, which has passed European safety tests for seatbelt anchorage, seat strength and Isofix, and Reimo roofs that meet strict German TÜV standards. Its conversions also come with a three-year/36,000-mile warranty.

The HemBil range is available direct from Concept Multi-Car, based in Hythe, Kent, although you will see these campers at both NEC caravan and motorhome shows (February and October), as well as some other exhibitions.

With three young children himself, Sam always says that he likes to design family-friendly campervans, with enough travel seats (with Isofix) to accommodate a young family, and that’s exactly what you get with the Escape campervan.

Featuring the ever-popular Reimo Variotech 3000 bench/bed system, this camper offers a total of five belted seats.

What’s more, because the seat sits on rails, it’s possible to add another two single seats to the rail system, giving a total of seven travel seats, if needed.

Come bedtime, the Reimo bench converts to a large double bed, with a further double available in the roof, if required. Roof options include the choice of a pop-top or high-top.

On the conversion front, there’s everything you’d need in this side kitchen layout camper, such as a double-burner gas hob, Smev grill, sink, choice of a front-loading or top-loading fridge, on-board fresh water container, Porta Potti and space for two Campingaz 907 cylinders, among other things.

Choose your HemBil Escape on a VW T6.1 (SWB or LWB), Renault Trafic (SWB or LWB), or Ford Transit Custom SWB. There’s also the Escape-SL which has a slimmer kitchen unit and wider seat/bed.

Just like the Escape, the Drift is also designed to be a great daily driver and family camper, having five belted travel seats and sleeping space for two or four people. But this campervan has double side sliding doors, and that allows for a really innovative swing-out kitchen pod that’s ideal for cooking al fresco.

In normal guise and with the door closed, it looks like a regular side kitchen layout campervan. However, the whole pod sits on an arm that allows it to swing out through the side door once you’re pitched up.

The unit is completely independent, too. Here, you get a top-loading fridge (which is not part of the swing-out system) and a two-burner hob and sink, as well as plenty of storage space in the cupboards. A couple of fold-down flaps create extra workspace, too.

Inside the camper, there’s plenty of room for everyone to relax, with twin swivel cab seats and a comfy Reimo bench. As it’s on rails, this can be slid forwards so that everyone can reach the table, which attaches to the bench via a swing-out bracket.

The HemBil Drift is also available on the VW T6.1 or Renault Trafic in short-wheelbase or long-wheelbase form, and the Ford Transit Custom SWB.

The HemBil Urban-S

Renault:

£54,750

Ford:

£58,250

VW:

£62,250

With a real focus on internal space here, the Urban-S is designed for those with growing families and it features a wide Reimo bench that can accommodate three child seats.

As the name suggests, this campervan is ideal for those who use it as their only vehicle and need something practical for urban living, so the campervan is easy to drive and park around town.

The spacious interior is achieved through fitting a slimline side kitchen unit, which allows space for that all-important wide travel bench.

Here, there’s a top-loading fridge, which is considerably narrower than a front-loading one, although still surprisingly spacious with a 20-litre capacity.

Next to that, there’s a single-burner gas hob and a compact sink with tap. There’s also an impressive amount of storage space, too, with a number of cupboards below the kitchen facilities, as well as a wardrobe at the back of the camper.

As with other campervans in the HemBil range, the Urban-S also benefits from having twin swivel cab seats, as well as the Reimo Variotech 3000 sliding bench system, which is great for travelling with small children, as it can be positioned behind the cab in order to be close to mum and dad on long journeys.

Of course, moving the bench into a forward position also creates a huge boot area, so there’s plenty of room for bikes and scooters, or whatever other toys and camping clobber you may take on holiday.

Like the other HemBil campervans, this one is available on a choice of VW, Ford or Renault base vehicle in short or long-wheelbase format, too.
