WHEN IS A TENT OR WIGWAM A CARAVAN?

Some people call them camping pods; others, mini-lodges. Alternative names include wooden tents and wigwams.
In each case, the concept is broadly the same with most comprising a small wooden semi-circular structure containing basic sleeping accommodation for 4-6 people. They are generally available for holiday hire on parks rather than being for sale.
Most have heating and electricity. Some provide basic kitchen equipment such as a kettle, toaster and microwave oven. Others are more luxurious with fitted double beds, mini kitchen sink, tv, toilet plus shower and even a wine chiller.
Despite all that, no one would describe them as luxury lodges. However, in the eyes of the law they are, apparently, caravans, not tents.
According to the British Holiday & Home Parks Association, they ‘fall within the definition of a caravan as set out in Section 29(1) of the Caravan Sites and Control of Development Act 1960 (as amended by the Caravan Sites Act) 1968’.
That, the BH&HPA continues, ‘is now generally accepted to be the case by most local authorities.’
