Merebrook

BIRDS, bats and butterflies have helped Derbyshire residential park Merebrook wing its way to a second Bellamy Gold award.

Merebrook, which occupies a riverside site at Whastandwell and lies within the Derbyshire Mills World Heritage Site, first received the Gold accolade last year. The David Bellamy Conservation Awards are designed to celebrate the UK’s chief providers of eco-friendly park home locations.

“Merebrook deserves a big round of applause for everything it’s done to create a wildlife wonderland!” said Professor Bellamy.

“The park is packed with biodiversity, and shows that residential environments such as Merebrook can be perfect countryside partners.”

The family-owned park features carefully planned landscaping and walks through mature woodland at the side of the river Derwent which provide valuable habitats for many different animal, bird and plant species. These areas are carefully maintained by the park, and have been successful in increasing its abundance of flora and fauna, including badgers, deer, red foxes, owls, bats and a number of protected plants.

Other environment-friendly initiatives include riverside allotments, water features, bat boxes, plus the planting of indigenous trees and shrubs and the sowing of flowers with high pollen-bearing blooms which draw a wide range of common and less familiar butterfly species.

Park owner, Adrian Daley said that he and the park staff were absolutely delighted to have, once again, received the holiday park industry’s top green prize from Britain’s best-known conservationist.

“Since first winning the award last year our exclusive community has continued to grow, with twenty newly built homes now occupied,” Adrian said.

“We have created an idyllic, eco-friendly, secure living environment where residents feel safe and can enjoy the company of like-minded people.”
