EV caravanners urged to plan ahead this summer

Towing a caravan with an EV can halve battery range
As more caravan owners hit the road in electric vehicles this summer, Compass Insurance is urging drivers to plan carefully to avoid range anxiety and charging frustration.
Plan ahead
Towing a caravan with an EV can halve battery range, making frequent top-ups essential, but many public charge points are not designed for cars whilst towing caravans – creating added hassle mid journey.
Kevin Minnear, Head of Underwriting at Compass Insurance, commented,
"Electric cars have come a long way, but towing a caravan with one is still a logistical challenge.
"With range reduced and many public charging stations not designed to accommodate a hitched caravan, it’s essential to plan ahead to avoid getting stranded, or stuck trying to unhitch in a crowded service station car park, or a winding country lane.”
Key tips from Compass:
- Use apps to map out caravan-friendly charge stops
- Be ready to unhitch at charging stations
- Confirm charging access with your campsite in advance
- Drive efficiently and watch payload
Fastned, an EV network, said it’s already upgrading hubs with drive-through layouts and wider bays to accommodate tourers – but there are still significant gaps. This is why it is so important to plan ahead and with EV ownership rising and families choosing UK breaks, reliable charging has become an essential part of the modern caravanning experience.
