North East combined authority: caravans key to our growth plans
Caravanners could play a key role in boosting the North East’s visitor economy, with new plans aiming to double the region’s tourism value to £10 billion by 2034.
A spokesperson for the North East Combined Authority (North East CA) told Out & About Live:
"We have ambitious plans to double the size of our visitor economy and that includes attracting more people from the UK, as well as the rest of the world, to discover our spectacular living history, castles and dramatic coastline, as well as our wild moors, walks and wildlife.
"We will be investing in tourism as part of our ten-year local growth plan to build a £10 billion pound industry. Caravan and motorhome tourism will be an important contributor to this, and domestic touring is definitely part of the mix we want to attract given the open spaces and big skies we have to offer.
"We’re in the process of creating a new tourism agency for the North East which will then drive our promotional activity and work with grassroots providers like caravan parks and campsites. We’re at an early stage since the Combined Authority was created last year but we’ll involve the industry as we move forward.
"The 28 Years Later campaign was part of the wider VisitBritain’s #StarringGreatBritain campaign which promotes popular film and TV destinations. We hope the locations used in the film will be a powerful draw to bring both domestic and international tourists to our region."
More support for local campsites
The North East CA confirmed that this strategy will include creating a new regional tourism agency, which will work closely with local providers like touring destinations and local campsites. The authority also emphasised the region’s vast potential for leisure vehicles, thanks to its natural beauty, historic landmarks and familiar locations.
The strategy ties in with VisitBritain’s #StarringGreatBritain campaign and the new 28 Years Later movie, which was filmed across Northumberland, Lindisfarne and Kielder Forest, where these landscapes are now being promoted as must-visit destinations for film fans, with the tagline “Visit If You Dare.”

Investment amid growing concerns
The region’s investment push comes amid growing concern over domestic tourism trends.
According to Out & About Live’s Back British Holidays campaign, the UK is forecast to see a 32% drop in domestic holiday trips by the end of 2025 – threatening £23.2 billion in spending and putting jobs and small businesses at risk.
In the North East alone, this downturn could result in 630,000 fewer visitors and a £148 million hit to local revenue.
