New research reveals positive benefits of tourism
VisitEngland offers fresh evidence that holidays close to home do far more than provide a relaxing break – they also boost wellbeing, strengthen local communities and create deeper social connections.
The results
The findings reveal that people living in areas visited by domestic and international tourists are 23% more likely to feel connected to their community, with higher levels of pride, wellbeing and social cohesion compared to those living in non-tourism regions.
For caravanners, who often spend holidays immersed in local communities – whether in coastal villages, countryside retreats or National Parks – this research will come as no surprise.
VisitEngland CEO, Patricia Yates, said,
“We already know how tourism drives economic growth for communities. With ‘The Social Value of Tourism’ report we can now also evidence how tourism improves wellbeing and social cohesion for both visitors and residents alike, as well as boosting employment opportunities, social mobility and improving local infrastructure.
“As this report demonstrates, tourism’s true value extends much broader than its economic benefits, creating connected communities where people want to live, work and visit and enriching community life.”
The power of a pitch
The study highlights how tourism improves access to green spaces, cultural experiences and better infrastructure, especially in rural and coastal areas.
With over half of residents in host communities living within five miles of cultural or green facilities, tourism also enhances everyday life for locals.
Notably, the report shows that 80% of people felt more positive after a UK trip and more than 70% reported improved wellbeing.
From a caravan pitch beside a serene river in the Lake District to a countryside campsite within walking distance of a historic village pub, these moments of connection and contentment are the essence of a British holiday.
Caravan holidays that give back
The report’s findings align strongly with the values behind the Back British Holidays campaign – a nationwide initiative urging both the public and government to protect and promote UK tourism. With domestic trips in decline and over £23.2 billion in projected losses, the campaign warns that thousands of businesses – including campsites, attractions and local hospitality providers – could be at risk.
While the campaign calls for policy change, it also empowers individuals to take action: by booking UK holidays, sharing their favourite memories and encouraging others to do the same.
Caravanners can lead the charge.
Touring across the UK supports rural businesses, keeps local attractions thriving and – as the VisitEngland research shows – helps maintain strong, connected communities.
Will you Back British Holidays?
In recent years, UK tourism has taken a sharp downturn, with tens of millions fewer visitors predicted in the next four years, leading to a cumulative loss of £23.2 billion for the industry and jeopardising thousands of jobs.
We are calling on the Government to step up and Back British Holidays, providing financial support for businesses and helping holidaymakers to get out and about in the British countryside once again.
