How to create new memories from old outdoor clothing

126a5675-b3f4-49cb-85ca-61bc5ea1632e

We all have a favourite piece of outdoor clothing that we’ve owned for years and can’t bear to give up

But what happens when that trusty old waterproof jacket finally reaches the end of its life? Do you just throw it in the bin along with all the memories it helped you create… and add to the landfill burden? Or does it hang in the wardrobe, gathering dust and taking up space but never seeing the light of day?

Neither is a great solution, but UK outdoor clothing brand, Keela, has come up with an idea that lets you breathe new life into your old gear, create new memories from old and help save the planet.

As part of its Legacy project, the Fife-based company has launched the Second Life scheme, where you can return your old item and the manufacturing team takes what fabric they can from it, and turns it into something new. That could see your beloved garment having a second life as a washbag, tote, or cushion.

Keela has also created a guide that will teach customers how to repurpose their unwanted items at home, themselves.

The Legacy project also offers a chance for outdoor enthusiasts to pick up a vintage collector’s piece, a designer one-of-a-kind sample, or a preloved exclusive.

Archive products are classic designs that are still in their original packaging and have never been used. Blueprint is where Keela’s designers have come up with unique, one-off designs – using new colours, materials, and ideas – that have never made it into the range. Déjà Vu features preloved garments that have been repaired and tested and put back on sale at a reduced price.

Also part of the Legacy project is the Ronas Smock, a lightweight jacket made from leftover fabric from a production run in the Keela factory.

Keela Sales Director, Sam Fernando, says,

Sustainability has been at the heart of Keela’s ethos for over 40 years, and the ‘Legacy’ initiative is the next step in our ongoing sustainability mission. We believe there is only one way to deal with your damaged or end-of-life garment: by recycling, reusing, and repurposing. The Legacy project brings that to life and offers a rare opportunity to acquire one-of-a-kind items that are entirely unique to anything else we have created before.
