Back British Holidays warns of £34.8bn loss to UK tourism by 2028
The Back British Holidays campaign has warned that the UK’s domestic tourism sector could lose £34.86 billion by 2028 if the decline in domestic tourism continues.
Launched by Out & About Live, the campaign has been tracking a steep drop in domestic holiday trips, with figures predicting a fall from 42.3 million in 2022 to just 25.5 million in 2025 – a near 40% reduction.
Calling for urgent government support
Speaking to the Express, campaign spokesperson, Daniel Attwood, said rising costs were pricing people out of holidays at home, despite strong summer weather.
“Prices have gone up and people have been required to spend more to get the same activity,”
The downturn is hitting caravanning, camping and coastal tourism hardest, with Back British Holidays forecasting a 39% drop in spending.
The campaign – which has featured on ITV News – is calling for urgent government action to protect small businesses, jobs, and vulnerable tourism economies. Its recommendations include increased financial and infrastructure support for tourism operators, sustained promotion of UK holidays and targeted measures to help rural and coastal communities.
We Back British Holidays, do you?
We believe that there's something truly special about holidays on British soil.
This is why we are calling on the Government to step up and Back British Holidays, providing financial support for businesses and helping holidaymakers to get out and about in the British countryside once again.
