Chepstow Castle (Monmouthshire)

Britain’s oldest surviving stone fortress (which began construction in 1067) perches on a cliff above the Wye, in southeastern Wales – making it one of the first UK Norman strongholds.

Later on, between 1146 – 1219, William Marshal, who is widely regarded as the greatest knight that has ever lived – serving five kings – oversaw major renovations, such as the now famous castle doors – which currently holds the title as the oldest castle doors in Europe. 

What’s on in 2026

Castell Roc returns each August with 13 nights of live music inside the castle walls. Expect everything from classical to rock, with Ultimate Eagles on Sunday 16 August and Emilio Santoro as Elvis also booked in for the lively music event.

Pont Kemys Caravan & Camping Park sits in an Usk Valley setting with hardstandings, an adults-only area, immaculate facilities and a riverside dog walk. It’s a great base for castle days, golf fans and Welsh tourism.

Conwy Castle & Town Walls (Conwy)

Built by King Edward I, Conwy Castle was a part of his "iron ring" to control Wales throughout the thirteenthh century. 

Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Conwy is a complete with intact late-thirteenth-century military architecture and is still surrounded by its well-built town walls, which make up a three-quarters of a mile long circuit – remaining largely unbroken – and covering 25 acres.

What’s on in 2026

Dates publish closer to the time, but two regulars to watch: the Four Castles Series Half Marathon (16 November, 2025 and 15 November, 2026) and the family-friendly Conwy Pirate Festival (13-14 June, 2026). Keep an eye out for opening updates and conservation work.

Trwyn yr Wylfa Campsite (Penmaenmawr) gives you sea and mountain views, coastal path access from the gate and the usual facilities including family bathrooms. Conwy’s harbourside is a short hop for fish and chips at sunset.

Powis Castle & Garden (Powys)

Beginning as a thirteenth century medieval stronghold, Powis Castle turned into a grand country house and after that a renowned home of the arts, featuring various Indian treasures over the 1800s. Also home to one of the world's most famous terraces, the Powis Italianate terrace is considered as the finest surviving example of a seventeenth century terrace. 

With each corner of the grounds steeped with history and legacy – with the Herbert family controlling the estate from the early 1570s to 1952 – Powis Castle makes a scenic and historical visit. 

What’s on in 2026

Powis typically runs seasonal garden tours, “putting the garden to bed” walks, photography groups and family trails at Easter and Halloween. Expect familiar events to be announced as the year unfolds.

Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park

The appeal of Eryri/ Snowdonia, and to a similar extent, Mount Snowdon – or its Welsh name Yr Wyddfa – is clear; knife-edge ridges, glacier-carved valleys and lakes that mirror the blue of the sky. 

So whether you take the mountain railway, stride up to the tip of a mountain or work your way across the various villages – and in the evening to the local pubs – the entire Eryri/ Snowdonia area is a real choose-your-own-adventure retreat.

Llangorse Lake (Brecon Beacons)

The largest natural lake in Wales is surrounded by meadows, birds, nature and gentle hills. Whilst there you can hire a kayak/paddleboard, book a permit, and paddle past a crannog with a thousand years of stories. 

A fun fact: The crannog on Llangorse Lake is the only crannog found in either England or Wales, and is now home of The Welsh Crannog Centre, where you can learn about lake dwellings dating back 5,000 years.

An itinerary of day-to-day fun is the main appeal at Llangorse Lake; as with most lake getaways, there is no shortage of activities with options like paddle sports, sailing, catch-and-release fishing from boats and wildlife watching from the Llangasty hide. History junkies can even visit the nearby Welsh Crannog Centre and learn all about crannog history – some dating back 5,000 years.

Red Wharf Bay (Anglesey)

A wide, tidal-swept collection of sand bordered by dunes and salt marshes, Red Wharf Bay is a top location if you're seeking a North Wales beach getaway. 

It makes an ideal beach day for swimming and dog walking – as the beach is also dog friendly. On top of this, the location is a nature reserve and is a go-to-spot for birdwatchers, with regulars like waders and waterfowl.

The Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club Offshore Dinghy Race (Beaumaris to Traeth Bychan) is the local classic, as with the sun comes laid-back coastal events and plenty of beach days. There is also the nearby Beaumaris Castle, which typically hosts medieval festivals, jousting and costume events, so keep an eye out for upcoming announcements.

Kingsbridge Caravan Park (near Beaumaris) is a quiet, family-run site with multiple pitching areas (including adults-only), two heated amenity blocks and easy access to castles, boat trips and the Menai Strait – a narrow passage/bridge which connects the island of Anglesey from Gwynedd, which is on mainland Wales.

Rhossili Bay & Worm’s Head (Gower)

A three-mile long combination of sand, backed by the cliffs of Rhossili Down and a tidal causeway to Worm’s Head – creating one of Britain’s greatest coastal views. But with this reputation comes caution. 

The Worm’s Head received its infamous name due to its resemblance of a sea monster, but this didn't stop famous poet, Dylan Thomas, from admiring it. Unfortunately, one night he was stranded due to a high tide, but Thomas is not the only victim, even within the last five years, several students have been rescued by the local RNLI. So when visiting, stay cautious and monitor tidal updates.

  • Dragon Coastal Ultramarathons: 18 – 19 July (100 mile, 50 mile, 30 mile).
  • Gower Peninsula Ultra Challenge: 18 – 19 July (multi distance).
  • Gower Mighty Hike (Macmillan): 27 June; typically loops the peninsula with big Rhossili views.

Plus guided sea-kayaking, nature walks and classic beach days.

Pitton Cross Caravan Park is a mile from Rhossili village, open all year and split into paddocks (family and dog-free areas available). Expect coastal walks from the gate, plus a handy on-site shop.

Plas Newydd House & Garden (Anglesey)

The Georgian elegance of Plas Newydd House and its surrounding gardens in unmatched, with genuinely breathtaking views, scenic viewpoints and its detailed architecture. It is also home to one of UK's largest and most famous murals, painted by Rex Whistler and expanding to 17.5 metres long. 

With 40 acres of garden and over 129 acres of woodland and parkland, Plas Newydd House & Gardens is a top pick for both families and couples, as it has the best of both worlds: a play park for the kids and a secluded garden for the adults in the rhododendron garden area.

What's on in 2026

Plas Newydd usually blends house tours with seasonal garden days and family activities, alos hosting various military museums and art shows, including Rex Whistler's famous 17.5-metre landscape painting. With Caernarfon and Newborough are only a short drive away, and you can make a full day of stately homes, plus beaches.

Rhyd y Galen Caravan & Camping Park (near Caernarfon) offers spacious pitches (alongside all-weather pitches) plus family rooms and a games barn. By location, it's well placed for Zip World, the Wales Coastal Path and Ynys Mon Beach.

Erddig Hall & Gardens (Wrexham)

Built between 1684 and 1687, Erddig Hall & Gardens is a time-capsule-type estate, deeply rooted in its own history and tales of former residents. 

The family who owned the estate, the Yorke family had what, at the time, was considered an a unusual relationship with their servants, commemorating them with poems and portraits. This collection, alongside the well-kept areas of the servants' chambers provides history enthusiast with an insight to how servants both lived and interacted through the 1600s and 1700s.

What’s on in 2026

Look for garden restoration days, seasonal family trails and house highlights talks. You can also visit the gardens, which are dog friendly in most areas and the hall which is open throughout the year. There is also the city of Wrexham, which is host to museums, restaurants and its renowned football team.

Plassey Holiday Park (Dee Valley) is a destination in itself, with an indoor pool, nature trails, nine-hole golf, a small retail village and fully serviced all-weather pitches. Altogether, it's ideal for mixed groups who want options on the campsite.

FOCUS Wales (Wrexham)

Taking place through 7 – 9 May, 2026, FOCUS Wales is the biggest music event in Wales and is stated to feature groundbreaking performances from established and upcoming artists. The festival will feature 250+ artists on 20 stages and attract over 25,000 people to the city of Wrexham.

Plassey Holiday Park would make a good base for the festival, as FOCUS Wales takes place across the city and is not the typical camping festival, so a nearby campsite makes perfect sense.
