Devon holiday park makes its Antarctic mark

A holiday park in Budleigh Salterton, Devon, Ladram Bay, recently made its mark in Antarctica when a team of British explorers made it to the South Pole with their flag.

Ladram Bay Holiday Park backed the charity fundraising expedition to raise money for medical research. Two British team members were polar explorer Alan Chambers MBE, an ex-Royal Marine who served for 16 years. And, former England Rugby Captain, Lewis Moody.

Each team member pulled a sled weighing about 200kg and walked for up to 12 hours a day in temperatures as low as -35C at an altitude of 10,000 feet.

Pole to pole

The expedition was the polar opposite of a journey made by Alan to the North Pole two years ago, also supported by Ladram Bay Holiday Park.

On each occasion of reaching the Pole, the teams unfurled the park’s flag to celebrate their success.

This expedition raised around £250,000 for brain tumour charities.

Zoe House, a director of Ladram Bay, and a member of the family that has owned the park since 1943, said:

"Alan is a very courageous and determined person, and I'm sure that the success of his latest challenge will be especially inspiring to younger people.

"The fantastic sum that his team have raised will help fund a pioneering new clinical trial to change outcomes for those with a brain tumour.”

What next?

She added:

"We're so grateful to him for flying our celebration flag at the South Pole, and we can't wait to hear what his next adventure will be!", added Zoe.

The park has many features, including an indoor climbing wall, watersports activities and a private beach. Ladram Bay also has an indoor swimming pool.

Ladram Bay welcomes touring caravans, motorhomes, campervans and tents. Plus, it rents out luxury holiday caravans, glamping pods and lodges.
