Billing campsite offers a number of water-based activities on their lake

Wondering what you can expect on a family-friendly campsite? Our choice of the best campsites for families guarantee to be a hit with all ages. The best family-friendly campsites have it all, from handy facilities to sandy beaches, and lots of things to do for all ages.

Family-friendly campsites will generally have a top-notch location – near a popular family beach, or within easy reach of family attractions, such as a theme park, for example.

The campsite’s facilities will also be geared towards families, with things like family shower rooms, baby changing, and maybe a shop for those essentials, or a restaurant for hungry tummies.

You’ll also likely find plenty on the campsite to occupy any free time – after all, happy kids mean happy parents. So there might be swimming pools, games rooms, play areas, and also evening entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.

What do you need to consider for family camping?

Before heading off on a family holiday it is worth taking some time to prepare and also think about what you want from a family-friendly campsite. Do you want an all-singing, all-dancing holiday park with arcade, swimming pool and restaurant, etc? Or do you want a more back-to-nature campsite with plenty of green space? Whatever kind of family-friendly campsite across the UK you’re looking for, here are some handy things to think about:

  1. Choose a campsite with a play area, or lots of open space to play games, or with a natural play area such a woodland.
  2. If your kids like to ride bikes, check if the campsite has a no bikes/scooters policy. The same applies to ball games if your children like a good kick-about.
  3. Campsites within walking distance of something to do with water are always a good choice, especially in warmer weather – it could be a swimming pool on the campsite, a stream, or even a family campsite near the sea.
  4. Perfect family evenings can be spent toasting marshmallows, so have a look for a campsite that allows campfires.
  5. If you’re planning to eat out, a family-friendly pub on the campsite or within walking distance will come in handy.
  6. One sign of a good family-friendly campsite is that you won’t be able to drag the kids off it! But if you are planning to explore the surrounding area, check out what children’s activities are nearby.
  7. Plan a few rainy-day options in the local area just in case – a local cinema, museum, or even an indoor games room on the campsite.
  8. And don't forget all the wet-weather essentials you'll need for the family, such as waterproof jackets and wellies. Likewise, be sure to pack the sunscreen for sunny days, too!
  9. A campsite that has organised activities, such as water sports or archery, will give the kids the chance to try something new.
  10. If you are camping with a baby or toddler, you might want to add a family bathroom to your checklist.
