VERDICT A good-quality eight-berth tent that is manageable for packing in the car and considerably lighter than similar capacity rivals PRICE £700 |

Compared to some of the other XL tents we’ve looked at, the Longleat II Air 800XL is relatively compact. Lengthwise it’s between 50cm and 100cm shorter than the others – but the more significant difference is in the width. The Longleat is a good couple of metres narrower than some of its rivals, which obviously means less floorspace inside. But it also makes it far more manageable for packing in the car and it’s considerably lighter than other eight-berth tents.
This is another tent with a vis-à-vis layout, with both the bedroom pods sleeping up to four people.
The Nightfall bedrooms are designed to reduce early morning light and let you sleep for longer.
Pitching is straightforward, simply unroll the tent and lay it flat, peg out the corners, open a side door, then inflate each beam. Vango’s AirSpeed valves help quicken up inflation and deflation.
The pre-angled beams give greater height to the tent and a more robust structure.
Although not as spacious as a typical tunnel tent, the living area is still big enough for a dining table and chairs. This a bright space, too, thanks to the large PVC windows that let light pour in during the day. At night, the curtains can be toggled closed for privacy.
To tackle any condensation issues, there are mesh ventilation panels in the living and sleeping areas, while the sewn-in groundsheet keeps out draughts and bugs. The flooring has drop-down sections at the doors to remove the tripping hazard and allow easier access for wheelchairs and buggies.
