A simple, straightforward design, but don’t let that put you off. This small poled tent is a great option for couples on weekend breaks as it’s so quick and easy to pitch.

WHO’S IT FOR?
Perfect for couples to use as a basecamp for weekend adventures – but also a great option for Duke of Edinburgh award camping.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?
At its core, camping is a fairly straightforward activity, but occasionally we have a tendency to overcomplicate things. Ultimately all you need is somewhere dry and comfortable to rest your head at night, and a bit of space to relax when the weather isn’t great outside. Sometimes the best approach is to keep it simple, and that’s exactly what Royal have done with this compact touring tent. Pitching is easy, with three colour-coded poles supplied. The Campden 3 provides cosy quarters for up to three people, although in truth it is far more comfortable for two. Its size and simplicity makes it perfect for weekend adventures. The bathtub groundsheet (attaches to the flysheet with toggles) and 4,000mm hydrostatic head fabric provide plenty of protection from the elements. There’s no standing room in the living area, but this is not a tent designed to spend lots of time in. That said, it’s still roomy enough for you to spread out and store plenty of kit. Access is through either the large front door or the small side entrance and the mesh backing provides plenty of ventilation. The tent has small windows at the front that let a decent amount of daylight in and there are built-in storage pockets for stashing small items.

WHAT’S GOOD?
It’s light and compact, so is easy to transport in the car and being so simple to pitch makes it ideal for weekend camping. The living area is spacious and comfortable and provides good storage space.

WHAT COULD BE IMPROVED?
More headroom in the living area would be appreciated and we always prefer a sewn-in groundsheet for keeping the elements (and creepy crawlies) at bay.
