Kampa Hayling 6

Coleman lakeside symbolsYes, yes. I know I’ve previously said size isn’t everything but, to coin another cliché, it’s also true that big is beautiful. The Hayling 6 is much larger than the other tents we’ve featured this month, but despite its size it still works well as a weekend tent. In fact, it proves my original point, which was that it doesn’t matter whether a tent was designed for two or 10, if it’s quick and easy to pitch it will fit the bill for a short break.

The Hayling 6 certainly is simple to put up and fits easily within my recommended 30 minute maximum for a weekend tent. Once pitched you’ll find there is loads of room for a family of four or five. The sleeping area at the rear has space for two double airbeds and perhaps another single but sleeping mats would allow you to accommodate six people – although there wouldn’t be much wriggle room.

The main living area is nice and spacious with plenty of room for any furniture you might want to bring along for the weekend. And this is where a tent of this size comes into its own. Not only is it ideal for a weekend but it is perfectly suitable for longer holidays, making it great value for money. The sense of space is enhanced by the four large windows, which let in lots of light but can be covered up for privacy in the evening.

The side door has a mesh backing so you can let in air but not insects – something the main front door doesn’t have unfortunately.

One thing I like about the front door is that it zips right down to the ground therefore doesn’t have a lip for toddlers (or clumsy adults) to trip over when they are going in and out. This is also useful for wheelchair owners who often find getting into tents difficult for that very reason. The downside is that the door doesn’t attach to the groundsheet at the bottom, making it possible for determined toddlers to escape through the gap.

Another major plus point for the Hayling is the built-in porch at the front – which provides you with the sort of outdoor space that you have to pay extra fColeman Lakeside 6or with most tents. It’s an ideal spot for cooking, even if it’s raining.

The olive green colour scheme is traditional although maybe a bit dreary, but the big ceiling-to-floor windows make it a bright welcoming tent.

VERDICT: With the Hayling 6, Kampa give you lots of tent for your money and as it’s quick to put up, it is ideal for a weekend away with the family. The amount of space means it could easily double-up as a tent for longer breaks. A good value for money option.
