What are the key factors in choosing a family tent? Size and flexibility of accommodation would have to be close to the top of the list and the Croyde 8 has plenty of both.  Following on from the success of the popular six berth, the new Croyde 8 has is a wide-bodied tunnel tent, with integral porch and groundsheet.

With five steel poles, all the same size, pitching is easy in theory but in practice the size means it’s rather unwieldy for two. It’s likely to take you between 30 and 40 minutes to put up but once it’s standing it feels sturdy – especially with the two metal poles that run along the inside of the tent from front to back.

There is an integrated porch ideal for cooking or for sitting in when the weather is fine. Large PVC windows on both sides of the porch allow light to stream in to this area and that is something that is repeated throughout the tent. There are two full length windows on either side of the large D-shape front door, which leads you into the main living area. The optional two-berth bedroom is immediately on your right as you enter – it can be removed to provide more space but even when it’s in place there is a lot of room inside. Plenty of space for furniture, including storage and a table and chairs. The sense of space is accentuated by the high headroom and large windows.

If there is enough accommodation for your needs in the main sleeping area at the back of the tent, another option would be to use the third bedroom as a storage area for clothes or food. A third possibility is to use it as a self-contained kids’ playroom, where the youngsters can make as much mess as they like behind a zipped door.

There are two sleeping pods at the rear. The larger of the two is listed as accommodating up to four but that would be something of a squeeze, to put it mildly. More likely you’d want to put a big comfy, double airbed in there and still have some space for storage. The other room is much smaller, but still capable of sleeping two.

A low level ventilation in the bedroom keeps the sleeping area cool and there is another decent ventilation point above the main front door. Further airflow comes via the mesh backed side doors, one of which has a rain canopy. Other features you’d expect, like a cable entry point and storage pockets, are present and correct.

The biggest positives of the Croyde 8 are its size and flexibility. It is bright and spacious throughout and offers a great deal for a family holiday. Ironically the size is also the only slight negative – in that it makes pitching that bit more difficult and on some sites you’ll have to pay extra for an oversized pitch.

VERDICT

An excellent, spacious family tent that offers flexible space for your holiday requirements.
