My first impression of the Coleman Instant 4 was that it looked like the child of an umbrella and a toddler’s travel cot. Something that looks initially so unwieldy, when unpacked, gave me doubts about its ability to go up instantly. But those doubts proved to be unfounded. Its folding arm system, consisting of six external poles – four of which are extendable both vertically and horizontally – sprouting from a central point at the top of the tent, allows for both quick pitches and speedy collapses. It took us roughly around five minutes to set up in total.

The Coleman’s pitching system sets it apart from other quick pitch tents. Traditionally instants are small things, with very little room to manoeuvre. Not the Instant 4. It’s a tall tent, with plenty of space inside. The living area is big, with room for a few chairs, plus space to stow luggage. The height of the tent also means that, unless you’re well over 6ft tall, you’re not going to be constantly stooping or crawling on all fours if you want to move about.

The sewn-in groundsheet is a nice touch, as is the cable access entry point and the various ventilation points. There are two sleeping pods at the back of the tent, which are also quick to set up – you just peg them to the interior roof and walls and you’re ready to go. A removable wall between the pods means you can really spread out if there are just two of you.

Collapsing the tent was simple – again, it only took around five-minutes. But it did take on a fair bit of air in the process. That didn’t detract from what is otherwise an excellent tent.

VERDICT

A quick pitch tent that tall people can embrace. Lots of space and good sleeping areas too.
