OUR VIEW Back in January we reviewed this tent’s baby brother the Da Gama 4 and found a good touring tent that was perfect for a couple but not ideal for family campers. The six-berth version is just as good, but with more sleeping and living space, making it suitable for larger groups. It’s probably still best for shorter camping trips, but adding the optional front extension would give that bit of additional space for a longer stay.

PITCHING The steel poles might add a bit of weight to the overall pack but they provide the sort of rigidity and stability that gives you extra peace of mind, especially when camping with children. Pitching is simple with two pairs of hands; there are just three sets of poles and these are easy to fit into the colour-coded sleeves. Lifting the poles is awkward for one but two should make light work of it.

LIVING For a weekend or touring tent the living area is extremely spacious, with plenty of room to accommodate a table and chairs. Most of the extra space comes in the width, and the high upright walls certainly make the most of the increased floorspace. The huge front door can be fully zipped open and the large, front porch provides shelter from the elements. It’s an ideal place to leave muddy boots on a wet day or to sit in the shade when the midday sun is at its height.

SLEEPING The three twin bedrooms are arranged along the back of the tent, with each big enough to house a double airbed. Depending on your needs, you can leave the three rooms as they are or remove the divider and turn one of them into a much larger sleeping area. There is decent headroom in the sleeping pods (in fact its excellent throughout the tent) and there is also good ventilation to minimise the risk of condensation.
