A poll of 1,000 regular campers revealed that 56% say sleeping outdoors improves the quality of their sleep, with many crediting natural noises such as raindrops, flowing rivers and wind moving through the trees.

These steady, familiar sounds were found to be more soothing than silence, helping campers relax and drift off more easily.

Tent fabric flapping, insects chirping and sleeping bags rustling also featured on the list of noises that aid sleep, according to the survey by the Camping and Caravanning Club.

Together, they create a natural backdrop that masks sudden disturbances and helps sleepers stay settled through the night.

The research also tracked the impact of camping on wider stress levels, with 49% of respondents saying sleeping outdoors helped reduce their overall stress.

Many cited the absence of daily pressures, reduced screen time and a slower pace of life as key factors in helping them switch off mentally.

Camping’s like hitting the reset button on your sleep. Spending time outside – soaking up sunlight, moving your body and tuning into nature’s soundtrack – gets your sleep systems working how they’re supposed to.

The benefits extend beyond sleep alone. More than seven in ten (71%) reported an increase in mood from being closer to nature, while 69% cited fresh air as their favourite thing about dozing on a campsite.

Time away from technology, experiencing new surroundings and the chance to stargaze were also highlighted as contributing to a more restful night.

With over half of campers recommending outdoor sleeping to those who struggle to nod off, the findings suggest that reconnecting with nature could offer a simple, effective way to improve both sleep and wellbeing.
