Keeping your campervan clean

Campervan maintenance

How to spring clean your campervan

For most of us, cleaning our campervan is a chore rather than a choice. But, like it or not, it’s one of those things that just has to be done, and it plays a crucial role in maintaining hygiene and maximising your ’van’s lifespan.

The frequency of how often you clean your campervan will vary based on how you use it, but generally, it's a good idea to carry out a good clean, inside and outside, before and after each camping trip.

If your campervan goes into hibernation over winter, you should perform a thorough spring clean before the first camping trip of the year to shake off the cobwebs. Similarly, a comprehensive clean at the end of the season is advisable to keep your campervan in top condition when it is parked up over winter.

Cleaning the exterior of a campervan

  • Avoid cleaning the exterior of the campervan on hot, breezy days to prevent the water drying and leaving streaks. Ensure you rinse before the cleaning solution dries.
  • For cleaning products, choose reputable brands that offer specialised products for campervans. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations to achieve the best results.
  • Hose down the campervan bodywork to remove dust and grit, softening stubborn deposits. If you decide to use a pressure washer, be aware that they may damage paintwork and delicate items like solar panels and vents.
  • Start cleaning with the roof. Use a spray, sponge, or brush to apply cleaning solution. If you have a pop-top roof, you can use a mild detergent or a specialised campervan roof cleaner . Take care when cleaning delicate materials to avoid causing any damage.
  • Use a toothbrush for algae around windows access flaps. Clean retractable steps to avoid clogs. Use black streak removers and insect cleaners for tough stains.
  • Maintain the waste tank by using a disinfectant product designed for portable toilets. Regularly empty the grey waste water tank to ensure hygiene.
  • Regularly clean and maintain the fresh water tank and pipes. Before filling the tank, rinse it to prevent algae growth. For periods of infrequent use, consider flushing the system to maintain its condition.
  • Cleaning the wheels and tyres isn't just about aesthetics – it's also a matter of safety. Scrub away dirt and brake dust using a soft brush, and make sure to rinse thoroughly to prevent corrosion.
  • Regularly clean your campervan's windows and mirrors using a glass cleaner that is safe for acrylic surfaces. Avoid using abrasive cleaners that could scratch the surface and use a microfibre cloth to prevent streaks.

Cleaning the interior of a campervan

  • The kitchen area in your campervan can be prone to spills and food residue. After each trip, wipe down the cooker, work surfaces, and sink to prevent dirt and grime build up. It's recommended to use a mild cleaning product specifically designed for campervans to avoid damaging surfaces.
  • Campervan floors can quickly gather dirt, sand, and debris. Placing mats or old beach towels at entry points can help collect these particles. Regularly vacuuming and shaking out these mats can keep your campervan's interior clean and tidy. Wipe the floor down regularly with a soft mop and a mild detergent.
  • If you often travel with messy kids and pets, it's wise to protect your seats and bedding with washable covers and blankets. Upholstery spray can help deal with spills and stains immediately, maintaining a fresh interior.
  • Maintaining a clean and functional toilet is crucial for your campervan's hygiene. Use a disinfectant product specifically designed for portable toilets to keep it fresh. Regular cleaning prevents odours and ensures a comfortable restroom experience.
