Campervan Inspiration

There’s nothing quite like the freedom of off-grid campervan life. Waking up to birdsong instead of traffic, brewing your morning coffee with a view that money can’t buy, and moving on whenever the mood takes you – it’s the stuff vanlife dreams are made of.

But going off-grid (or wild camping, as it’s often called) also means taking a bit more responsibility. Whether you’re tucked away in a quiet corner of Scotland, parked up in the Lake District, or spending a stealthy night in a city street, being prepared and respectful is key.

Here are 10 essential dos and don’ts to help you camp off-grid safely, sustainably and with a smile.

1. Do get yourself set up for self-sufficiency

Before heading off-grid, make sure your batteries are charged, your solar panels are soaking up as much sunshine as possible, and your fresh water tank is full. A bit of prep means you can relax and enjoy the freedom of not having to plug in or refill for a few days.

2. Don’t assume wild camping is always allowed

In most parts of the UK, you can’t legally camp overnight without the landowner’s permission. Always check for local byelaws or signs, and never ignore “No Overnight Parking” notices – fines and bad vibes aren’t worth it!

3. Do pick the right campervan for your adventures

If you’re all about squeezing down country lanes and finding secret wild spots, a smaller campervan is ideal. But if you’re planning longer off-grid trips, a campervan with a washroom and kitchen will keep you comfortable and make life that bit easier.

4. Don’t dump your waste in nature

Whatever you do, don’t empty toilet cassettes, grey water or rubbish in the wild. Use proper disposal points or campsites instead. It’s one of the most important ways to protect the places we all love and to keep local communities on side.

5. Do keep things low-key

Wild and stealth camping are all about blending in. Keep noise to a minimum, avoid setting up chairs or awnings and always leave your spot exactly as you found it – or even cleaner. The more discreet and respectful you are, the more welcome vanlifers will remain.

6. Don’t stay in one spot for too long

A night or two is plenty. Moving regularly keeps you under the radar and prevents overcrowding or friction with locals – especially in beauty spots like the Highlands or the Lake District.

7. Do respect locals and the land

If a landowner asks you to move on, do so politely. Also, support local communities by popping into the village shop, pub or café during your stay. It’s a lovely way to say thanks for the hospitality.

8. Don't park inconsiderately

Never block farm gates, driveways, or field entrances, and avoid parking too close to homes or businesses. A bit of common sense keeps everyone happy – and helps preserve the good reputation of responsible vanlifers.

9. Do look after yourself and your campervan

Choose overnight spots that feel safe, lock your doors and close your blinds or curtains when you settle in. If you’re travelling solo, let someone know your rough location. A little care helps you relax and fully enjoy your trip.

10. Don’t rely on solar alone in winter

UK sunshine can be hit or miss, especially from October to March. Make sure you’ve got a backup power option, like a B2B charger or extra battery capacity, so you don’t end up in the dark.

Final thoughts

Off-grid campervanning is one of the best ways to experience the UK’s wild beauty – from hidden forest clearings to misty mountain passes. With a little planning, a lot of respect and a good dose of common sense, you can enjoy the freedom of wild camping while keeping it sustainable for everyone.

So, charge up, stock up and hit the road – the next great view is waiting just around the corner.
