A made-to-measure mattress company has issued some advice following a spate of recent TikTok videos about preventing mattress mould.
One video showed the use of rubber tiles to help boost airflow, but Myles Hardy, mattress expert at Custom Size Beds, has a word of caution. While the tiles can help raise the mattress, they may not provide a much-needed airflow.

"When warm air from your body meets a cold van base, condensation forms," Myles explains.
"If that has nowhere to go, it becomes the perfect breeding ground for mould. That's why it's essential to create proper ventilation beneath the mattress - not just a small gap"
Tips for keeping your camper mattress mould-free include:
- Choosing a slatted or ventilated base wherever possible
- Adding a breathable underlay or mesh layer between the mattress and platform
- Leaving a 2cm gap around the mattress edges to improve airflow on all sides
- Keeping the motorhome or campervan's temperature consistent and avoiding overinsulation that traps heat and moisture
