VW to reveal new generation of California campervans

The concept for the new generation of Volkswagen California campervans is to be unveiled soon – and it appears there might be some interesting changes afoot

The world premiere of the California Concept will take place at the Caravan Salon show in Düsseldorf, Germany, which runs between 25 August and 3 September.

But to whet your appetite, a few details have been announced in advance of the big reveal – with a hint that the new vehicle will have twin sliding doors.

Images released by VW show canopies extending out from both sides of the vehicle and in a statement the company said, “No one has ever claimed that a California should have only one sliding door.”

That then raises intriguing questions about how the interior layout of the new California will look.

Based on the long Multivan, the Concept will continue to be designed for day-to-day use but quickly be transformed into a camper.

For the first time, the California will be fitted with plug-in hybrid technology designed to give it more flexibility on the road – for both short and long-distance driving. It will also take advantage of the sort of smart technology that has made the current California 6.1 one of the most advanced vehicles of its type.

The 6.1’s touchscreen, which controls all the main campervan settings, will be developed in the Concept into a tablet-style screen in tablet format which will allow more smart control.

In a statement, VW Commercial Vehicles says,

The production version of this new generation of the California, which Volkswagen says is the most successful campervan of all time, is scheduled to be built at the VW plant in Hanover from 2024 onwards.
