UK Government Responds to Call for Licence Changes

The Department for Transport has commented saying it is yet to assess the potential benefits of altering Category B licences in the UK.
The petition, originally formed in 2025, called for the Category B licence to be changed, allowing holders to drive motorhomes and other leisure vehicles up to 4,250kg, an increase from the current 3,500kg limit.

This was in response to new EU directives which, along with a host of other changes, proposed the same alterations to said licences.
The Fourth Driving Licence Directive, published by the European Union in November 2025, outlined that member states could permit Category B holders to drive motorhomes up to 4,250kg, covering petrol, diesel and zero emission vehicles.

Under the EU framework, changes would roll out over time. Member states would be required to mandate either a minimum of seven hours of training, a dedicated test, or a combination of both, covering key safety topics outlined in the directive.
However, the Department for Transport's Road Safety Strategy, published in January 2026, did not address alignment with the new EU directive.
Any future amendments to driving licence law, the Government confirmed, would be subject to public consultation and a full assessment of their impacts.
