A petition to mirror the changes in the UK is already in effect, with over 10,000 signatures, though is due to lapse on 9 April, 2026. Parliament is obligated to respond.

The NCC supports the change and continues to lobby for regulatory update and has even pressed the Department for Transport for an update on what changes may occur in the UK.

Simon Lightwood, Under-Secretary for Transport, said

The Department has not yet made an assessment of the potential merits of allowing holders of a category B driving licence to drive motorhomes with a maximum mass of up to 4,250kg.

Countries within the EU will have until 2028 to implement the directive into national law, meaning changes will occur gradually over the bloc.

The change is designed to minimise the number of crashes on EU roads, as well as minimise undue administrative burden on citizens and local authorities.

A driving force of this bill is the rise in alternatively fuelled/electric vehicles; solar systems, lithium batteries and enhanced insulation have become significantly more prevalent, increasing the average weight of vehicles.
