Thor shows what motorhome electric charging could look like

In a groundbreaking move towards electric-powered travel, Thor Industries has introduced its concept for state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) charging stations designed specifically to cater to the needs of recreational vehicles (RVs), what we know as motorhomes, campervans and caravans in the UK.

This initiative aims to provide ample space and convenience for eRVs and EV cars towing caravans alike.

While primarily focused on the US market, the concept shows great potential for similar facilities in Europe and the UK. It addresses one crucial aspect of driving electric motorhomes and campervans for leisure, introducing charging infrastructure tailored exclusively for electric-powered RVs, ranging from caravans towed by EVs all the way up to A-class motorhomes.

The company hopes to inspire a network of drive-through stations in rural locations where they are needed by motorhomers and caravanners alike. In this vein, Thor is supporting the American RV industries efforts to encourage state governments to install RV- compatible charging points.

One standout feature of these cutting-edge charging stations is wide pull-through aisles, particularly useful for cars pulling caravans or motorhomes with a trailer on the back. Future EV owners towing caravans will also love the idea of dual-charging cords, allowing you to top up the car and caravan battery at the same time. The cables have devices that ensure they stay off the ground when not in use.

Thought was given to the other facilities, offering relaxing spaces for those waiting for charging to finish. These include toilets, dog exercise areas, picnic benches, playground and fitness equipment, with designs that are intended to blend into the surrounding natural environment.

The design also incorporates solar roof and rainwater harvesting. Features like water filling points for the fresh water tanks and grey/black water disposal were also incorporated.

Thor, which owns the European Erwin Hymer Group, hopes that stations like this will be adopted by rural communities, campgrounds and governments, allowing travel in an electric motorhome to become much easier.
