Partnership between Ford and Erwin Hymer Group announced

f7ccdfec-65e3-41c9-8e7c-870cba2b533c

Ford and Erwin Hymer Group (EHG) have announced an agreement for the delivery of Transit and Transit Custom light commercial vehicles as basis for campervans and motorhomes

In addition, a strategic partnership has been agreed that includes a shared view of customer needs and legal framework. The agreement covers topics such as emissions, electrification, digitisation, connectivity, and the integration of driver assistance systems. Ford will also closely integrate EHG into the product development process.

With the agreement, both companies are responding to the boom in motorhome and campervan sales that has now been going on for the past eight years.

Ford is the leading manufacturer of light commercial vehicles in Europe, while EHG, the European market leader for motorhomes, is broadening its choice of base of vehicles for its various brands and thus improving the ability to deliver, which has been restricted by the semiconductor crisis.

As part of Thor Industries, the world's largest manufacturer of leisure vehicles, EHG also sees an advantage in the cooperation in the fact that Ford, as a global company, produces the Transit not only in Europe, but also in North America and China.

MMM is Britain’s best-selling motorhome magazine and it has been for over 55 years. Each four-weekly issue is packed with the best motorhome travel features, genuine reader reviews of campsites, in-depth motorhome reviews, plus the latest technical advice, buying tips and much more.

MMM’s fully searchable digital library gives you access to the latest issues, plus every edition of MMM since January 2012.

The cooperation focuses on Transit Custom (for pop-top campers), as well as Transit panel vans and low-frame chassis-cabs, which will be used as the basis for campervans, low-profiles and overcab coachbuilt motorhomes from the EHG brands.

The base vehicles will be produced at the Ford plant in Kocaeli, Turkey (where Ford is investing in expanding production capacity) and delivered in instalments from 2022 to 2024.

This is not the first business agreement for the two partners. In the early 1980s, the Ford Transit was the basis for the first Hymercar campervan and, in 2004, Ford began providing base vehicles for low-profile, overcab and even A-class models.

Martin Brandt, CEO of the Erwin Hymer Group, said,

The two Ford Transit series convinced us as the base vehicles for our brands. Our customers will particularly appreciate their diversity, innovative assistance solutions and attractive design. Ford has also given us a clear strategy for developing its commercial vehicle business in Europe.

Hans Jörg Klein, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board of Ford-Werke GmbH, added,

At Ford, we have many years of experience and a great passion for mobile homes. We are all the more excited that our two commercial vehicle series, Custom and Transit - and especially the new versions, ‘Active’ and ‘Trail’ – have convinced the Erwin Hymer Group and that we are now able to supply another equally strong and innovative partner. We are thus participating in one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments in Europe.
