Malibu’s focus is on campervans

Malibu’s big news for the coming season is primarily regarding its campervans, as they will now all be produced at a new purpose-built factory in Ormož (Slovenia), which soon will have capacity for around 3,000 campervans, with 180 staff initially (the company expects the workforce to number 300 by the end of 2024). In the future the final capacity will be 5,300 Vans per year.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Malibu Van and buyers can now get the comfort 600 DB and 640 LE as a family-for-4 variant. This adds a pop-top, providing a double bed in the roof.

This pop-top consists of a GRP roof that’s insulated and has an aluminium inner skin – for weight saving and weather protection.

Across its four model lines, some come with unique porthole windows and there are numerous options with cab ceilings – removing the shelf, running the storage into the cab or opting for a panoramic rooflight.

Highlights of Malibu’s 2024 campervans

  • The comfort 600 DB and 640 LE models are now optionally available as a family-for-4 with pop-up roof. They have either a double bed in the rear (DB) or longitudinal single beds (LE).

  • Malibu Van offers a total of seven basic models within four lines – compact, comfort, diversity and first class – two rooms, all based on the Fiat Ducato.

  • The Malibu Van now comes from a new factory built especially for it in Ormož in Slovenia. The new factory will soon have an annual manufacturing capacity of around 3,000 Malibu Vans.

Malibu, part of the Carthago Group, produces a line-up of great-value A-class and low-profile motorhomes, and it has also developed an extensive range of campervans. These sit firmly in the premium segment of the camper market.

Dubbed Malibu Van, all models are based on the Fiat Ducato, and at the very top of the range is this first class – two rooms 640 LE RB. As the name would suggest, this has a top-notch build quality and a clever ‘two rooms’ design, which effectively divides the campervan into two separate areas – with a lounge/diner and kitchen up front and en suite bedroom with changing area at the rear. A room divider shuts off the toilet and bedroom area from the rest of the campervan, creating those distinct spaces.

The XL flexi-washroom "1000+ with changing room function" has a toilet, which swivels away under the rear beds and a tambour door to cover over the basin, when showering.

There are plenty of storage options throughout, including two wardrobes. The smaller of the pair is at the end of the kitchen, with a second larger closet beneath the foot of the offside bed. It can be accessed through a conventional front door or from the top, via a hinged section of the bed base.

The premium kitchen has an 84-litre compressor fridge which faces the front, and above the fridge is a two-burner hob alongside a stainless-steel sink with a flush-fitting cover.

A shelved cupboard, ideal for cups, bowls, etc, sits above the work surface, while under the sink are three deep drawers. The large lounge/eating area can seat up to four with an extendable dining table.

Back in the bedroom, there are two comfortable single beds which run lengthways and fill the full width of the campervan. More generous storage can be accessed under one of the beds by lifting the base.

The 540 DB sits within the compact range and is designed for everyday use all year round. Despite the name, there is a definite feeling of spaciousness in here, especially if you go for the family-for-4 pop-up roof option.

The well-thought-out layout design combines the compact dimensions of a campervan with the comfort of a large motorhome, making it well suited to driving in urban areas, in particular. You might even want to consider it as a second vehicle.

The lounge/dining area is compact, but comfortable for four, and boasts overhead lockers as well as an underfloor storage area where you can stow shoes or other smaller items. The kitchen on the opposite side has a generous 84-litre fridge, a two-burner hob cooker and covered sink. There are three deep drawers and an overhead storage locker as well as an extendable worktop.

In the bedroom you’ll find a transverse double bed with a shelved cupboard and a wardrobe. The pop-up roof houses an extra double bed and features high-quality insulation.

The first thing that strikes you when you get into the diversity 640 LE K is the sheer feeling of space inside. The reason for this is simple – as there is no tall furniture on the offside, you have an uninterrupted view through the entire campervan and plenty of room to make your way around.

That impression of space is helped by the XL-sized kitchen and generous lounge/dining area. The kitchen has an 84-litre compressor fridge, good-sized work surfaces and excellent storage, including extra-wide and deep kitchen drawers and a tall dresser-style cabinet above the fridge.

The diversity 640 LE K also benefits from Malibu’s XL flexi-washroom "1000", which has a space-saving two-piece sliding door. Inside, the toilet slides away to create a larger shower area and a screen covers the basin, so no curtain is required.

The sleeping area features two lengthways single beds, with a large wardrobe under one bed and a cupboard under the other.
