Motorhomes are a prime target for theft during the winter months. These practical security tips explain how to protect your vehicle when it’s used less.
Members of the Stolen Motorhome Database group on Facebook have reported more than 130 thefts of motorhomes and campervans in 2025, which equates to more than two a week.

Physical deterrents are among the most effective ways to prevent motorhome theft. These include:
- Steering locks: using steering locks as both a visual and physical deterrent is highly effective. These locks can be more secure than other options, such as wheel clamps, potentially slowing thieves down and making the vehicle harder to steal
- Wheel clamps: they are highly visible and can prevent the motorhome from being driven away. The clamp must be unlocked and removed before the vehicle can be moved
- Alarms: installing a high-quality alarm system can alert you and others nearby if someone attempts to break into your motorhome
- Tracking devices: GPS tracking devices provide real-time location information and can help police quickly locate your motorhome if it is stolen
- Gear stick and other locks: various locks can be used in addition to other suggestions to hinder the thief's ability to drive off

Another key aspect of motorhome security is ensuring it can be easily identified in the event of theft. Consider displaying the first four characters of your registration number prominently on the roof of your motorhome.
Finally, if you're storing your motorhome at home, consider reversing it into position and leaving the wheels turned towards the house or a wall. This positioning can make it more difficult for thieves to tow the vehicle away.
