With so many things to see and do in Ireland, we've compiled a list of the top 5 must-see attractions. Number 3 on the list is ...
3) The South Kerry Coastline
When driving along the Ring of Kerry route (a tourist trail covering the south coast of Ireland) some of the most beautiful coastal scenery opens up before you. Think long stretches of sandy beach, secluded coves, rocky peninsulas and distant islands waiting to be explored. The Ring of Kerry can be explored by tourist bus, there is a signposted Ring of Kerry cycling path and the alternative walking route is the Kerry Way which roughly follows the scenic driving route.
Two beaches in County Kerry to look out for are Derrynane and Rossbeigh. Derrynane beach, near Caherdaniel, has a wide, expansive beach with white sand, many rocks to climb on and rock pools to explore. When the tide is out walk over to Abbey Island to the ruins of Derrynane Abbey. Parking is easy at Derrynane House, the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell, Ireland’s famous ‘liberator’. The house is now a museum and also houses a restaurant.
Further up the coast is Rossbeigh (also known as Rossbehy) beach. This sandspit stretches out for about three miles into the north Atlantic, towards the Dingle Peninsula. The backdrop to the beach is the mountains and village of Glenbeigh, with dunes directly behind the beach. A circular walk along the sand and then back along the dunes makes for stunning views, solitude and a perfect place to enjoy a sunset.
You can’t spend all that time looking out across the sea to far-off islands without being intrigued to what lies out there. Regular boat trips run from various points in County Kerry to the islands of Skellig Michael, Valentia and Great Blasket. Skellig Michael is a World Heritage Site of natural scenery and steeped in history. Boat trips take place from Portmagee Pier and Ballinskelligs Pier.
