Q1: When did Campal start out?

Martin and Lisa,Managing Directors

Martin and Lisa, Managing Directors

Campal began in early 2016. We are a family-run, customer-focused business. Our “big break” came a year later when, unbeknown to us, one of our conversions featured in Stern magazine in Germany. With a seal of approval from Germany, our reputation for good design, quality and workmanship was born. To this day we have a big presence in Germany, as well as the Netherlands, Denmark, Austria and the UK.

Q2: How has the campervan market changed since then?

Campervans have always been cool, but they are even cooler now. The pandemic has been the catalyst for change in so many ways. There are many more wonderful, affordable, conversion modules, both fixed and removable, out there in all shapes, sizes and configurations, providing the same comfort and luxury as a hotel, so no wonder more people are holidaying in the great outdoors.

Q3: How would you sum up the company’s ethos and values?

We set very high standards here at Campal. Call us old-fashioned, but we still believe that human contact goes a long way. We are not an “add to basket, proceed to checkout” kind of business. We like to converse with our customers, sharing information and interacting on amore personal level. Going the extra mile is a natural part of our transaction with customers.

Q4: What sets you apart from the crowd

We've worked very hard to gain a great reputation for quality, service, and value for money. You will know a Campal when you see it. We're unique in that we specialise in removable conversions for an extensive range of cars. We believe that car campers should not be restricted by vehicle type. If you hadn’t considered that your day car could be a camper, now is the time to start believing it!

Q5: What do you think makes a great campervan conversion?

Campal storage

Simple, the ‘wow’ factor. Not only do they have to be attractive, but comfortable, functional and practical. Getting that sense of joy and excitement from it is very important, too. Our Campals are comfortable, versatile, and built to last.

Q6: What’s your best seller?

From our standard range, our “signature unit”, the Campal Split is our best seller as it offers the flexibility of a double or single bed. For hatchbacks, estates, 4x4 and SUVs, the Campal Estate is the best seller. We do, however, have more and more customers using our custom build service or are opting to take advantage of our pic 'n' mix approach to our standard range. We are very flexible when it comes to modifying a product in our standard range or combining ideas from two different ones. All you need to do is ask.

Q7: Have you got any exciting new developments in the pipeline?

We are excited to announce that 2023 will see the introduction of new products and a few tweaks to our existing range.

Q8: What advice would you give to someone thinking about buying a campervan?

We provide the furniture aspect of a campervan and not the vehicle itself. A camper conversion is an investment that requires careful research and consideration. We would suggest that you have a very good idea of what your camping essentials are and what style you like. Visit showrooms and ask lots of questions. It is also very important to make sure that you get what you want!

Q9: What’s the most unusual question you’ve ever been asked by a customer?

Can you make my Fiat 500 into a camper? Of course we can, so we did it (including thermal window blinds, too!). We love a challenge.

Q10: What’s the best campervan trip you’ve personally undertaken?

Like most people, venturing out has not been that easy over the last couple of years. Moving into our new purpose-built factory in 2022 has kept us very busy this year, but when we have managed to get out, we enjoy our family unit in our Transporter with our little Lucy or short breaks in our Berlingo XL.

The Campal range

Campal has a large range of handmade, high-quality conversion units available, or you can choose to modify an existing module or have a brand-new Campal designed specifically to meet your needs. As well as the units highlighted below, the range also includes the Simply Campal, Vacation, For One, For Two and Slimline models

Campal Split

Campal Split

The Campal Split, launched in 2018, has been Campal’s most popular unit to date. It gives you the flexibility of setting up a standard double or single bed in the back of your car – and is compatible with a wide range of models. The unit is not fixed permanently to the vehicle and is completely removable for storage, coming apart for easy assembly and storage.

The pull-out kitchen includes a cutlery drawer and a table with wine glass holder and it features detachable shelves. It also comes with an Outwell double-burner stove and features a removable storage box with built-in water container and pump tap. For daytime use it can be set up as a large sofa or a U-shaped sofa, either with or without a table.

The unit comes in a lightweight but tough, natural birch-coloured plywood that is weather resistant and easy to clean. Your car will still accommodate five people when the unit is in its closed position in the boot and a built-in stabilising mechanism will keep the unit in place while driving. The Campal Split costs £2,220 plus delivery.

Campal Estate

Campal Estate

This unit will convert your estate or MPV into a micro-camper for overnight adventures. The key thing here is that the unit is completely removable, so no modifications to the vehicle are needed. The unit can be taken out of the car at any time for home or garage storage and the car will still accommodate five passengers when the unit is closed away in the boot. The conversion varies in size and price depending on the vehicle, with prices starting at £1,140. Some models come with an extendable and removable bed. It also comes with a set of removable, soft velour cushions that are washable and fire retardant and are available in light blue, light grey or black. The kitchen features an Outwell Olida double gas stove as well as a water container with pump tap.

Thermal insulated window blinds are available to provide you with more privacy at night and to keep out external light. These also help keep the vehicle cool in the summer and retain heat in the winter, as well as contributing to reduced condensation. Prices start at £90 and the blinds are available for a wide range of vehicles.
