A company specialising in VW campervans based on new and used vehicles, and offering multiple conversion options. We caught up with Company Director, Paul Reeve, to find out more…

When did Cambridge Campervans start out?

Approximately 10 years ago. We’re now an established family-run business with a genuine passion for Volkswagens, specialising in VW T6 and T5 Transporter-based campervan conversions.

What sets you apart from the crowd?

We pride ourselves on creating great-quality, reasonably priced campervans, with a variety of optional extras and choices of colours,
so you can really personalise your campervan. We are extremely knowledgeable on all aspects of campervanning and make time to answer all of our customers’ questions.

How would you sum up the company’s ethos and values?

We are a family-run business that believes in putting the customer first at every opportunity. We believe in making people’s campervan dreams come true!

What do you think makes a great campervan conversion?

A variety of things; for some people, it’s the addition of a heater while, for others, it’s all about the interior colour. We have listened to our customers over the years, so we understand what is important, meaning we can ensure our campervans will tick all
your boxes, and at great value, too.

What kinds of bespoke options do you offer?

We offer three bed types from a standard rock ‘n’ roll type, to a RIB bed with Isofix, and also a SMARTbed which is on sliding rails. We also offer a range of accessories from Porta Potties to Vango awnings, as well as heaters, solar panels, microwaves and shower points – we will always work with each customer to try and achieve all their wishes.

What’s your best seller?

Our top sellers are the T6.1 DSG (automatic) in either Indium or Pure Grey, closely followed by the 108bhp (110PS) manual T6.1. We build campervans to the customers’ specified colour interior with our most popular interiors being the ultra-modern carbon fibre, as well as the stunning metallic blue and grey.

Have you got any exciting new developments in the pipeline?

We are always looking at ways in which we can improve. We have lots of people asking us about blinds, so that’s the next thing for 2021 that we will be offering (in the same way that, last year, we started offering microwaves). We are also very excited about being able to offer new VW Crafter conversions in 2021 for those looking for a larger campervan.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about buying a campervan?

Do your research! There are lots of companies out there and you need to find the best one for you. We welcome people to our site so that they can see our conversions to really get a good sense of the build quality and a feel for us as a company. We are often told by customers that we made the journey easy and our laid-back but knowledgeable manner was reassuring.

What’s the most unusual question you’ve ever been asked by a customer?

People ask us a lot of questions, which we are always happy to answer. We get questions about whether our campers are insurer approved (they are), and about habitation checks (these are always done before our campervans are collected). We also get asked for lots of tips; as we are such experienced campervannners, we are always happy to share things that we have learnt over the years as well as sharing tips from other happy customers!

What’s the best campervan trip you’ve personally undertaken?

We usually have an annual trip to Cornwall in our campervan. It’s s a long journey from our Cambridge base but, with a comfortable camper, it’s an easy journey. Then it’s off to enjoy the beaches with the campervan just a stone’s throw away, stocked with drinks and snacks to keep us going, then back to the campervan for a great night’s sleep before doing it all again tomorrow!

The Cambridge Campervans range…

The company offers conversions on both new and used models. If used, Cambridge Campervans will source a mechanically sound, low-mileage vehicle for you. New vans are available in 108bhp (110PS), and 148bhp (150PS) manual versions as well as the 148bhp (150PS) DSG (automatic).

These are, of course, available in a range of colours, including the ever-popular retro-style two-tone look.

Whichever base vehicle you choose, you can further personalise your camper conversion to suit your own style and taste with a wide variety of wood and interior colour and upholstery options to choose from.

There’s also a long list of options available, such as solar panels, diesel blown-air heaters, bike racks, awning, etc. If ordering a new base vehicle, you’ll have the full range of Volkswagen factory-fit options at your disposal, too, which includes things like heated cab seats, built-in reversing camera and sat-nav.

Besides building bespoke conversions to order, the company sells already built, ready-to-go campervans from its premises in Cambridgeshire; just head to its website to find out more.

It also offers campervan hire and try-before-you-buy and, if you go on to buy after renting, you’ll be refunded 50% of the hire fee.
