Exe Valley Caravan Site campsite review
647154b6-ad2e-42d8-b0f5-d2044d0ae554
This charming site within Exmoor National Park is set in the grounds of the owners’ 17th century mill house with much of the machinery still in working order. In fact, owner Paul usually opens the mill on a Sunday morning for campers to watch the big wheels in action.
Exe Valley Caravan Site is for adults only, with pitches either beside the river or alongside the mill stream. The campsite covers four acres with 47 grass pitches that have electric and TV hook-ups, plus 16 hardstandings. Facilities include newly renovated toilet blocks, showers and accessible facilities. There’s a small shop in the reception cabin, a laundry and a handy motorhome service point.A further acre of land makes for a pleasant walk to the weir to watch the cascading water and, in late summer and autumn, you might see salmon and trout leaping. Dogs are welcome to run free and splash in the river.
Because of the site’s location in a wooded valley beside the river, birds are in abundance with kingfishers, dippers and herons regularly being seen. Fishermen can cast their lines from the comfort of a riverside pitch.
Cycle hire is available and several walks start from the site leading to the moors and woodland. Exmoor offers heather-clad moors with ponies roaming freely. For a true taste of this wild habitat, take a guided walking-safari trip.
When you’ve walked up an appetite, the Badgers Holt Inn just 200 yards away serves home-cooked food. It’s lovely walking back to site after an evening meal and sitting outside the ’van looking at the starry sky. In this area of low light pollution, you can simply gaze up and wonder.
