WW2 caravan history uncovered at Beaulieu

A new exhibition opening at the National Motor Museum next month will uncover how caravans played an unexpected role in Britain’s Second World War.

Pitch Up and Carry On, created in partnership between the Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection and the National Motor Museum, will run from 13 September, 2025 until early summer 2026.

Pitch Up and Carry On: WW2 caravan stories

Drawing on rare archive material, including photographs, advertisements, manufacturers’ records and first-hand accounts (some of which is from our own Caravan magazine), the exhibition will explore how caravans were adapted for military and civilian use during the conflict. Examples range from RAF mobile offices and army field headquarters to Women’s Land Army accommodation and even air raid shelters.

When war broke out, the then Caravan Club reduced membership fees, offered practical guidance and worked closely with government bodies to promote caravans as valuable mobile facilities. Manufacturers, meanwhile, switched production from leisure models to utility trailers for the armed forces and emergency services.

A special video section will feature footage and the memories of a woman who grew up in a caravan during wartime.

Senior Curator, Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection, Sara Riccabone says,

“This exhibition, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, sheds light on an overlooked but fascinating chapter of both the Club and wartime history. We are delighted to collaborate with the National Motor Museum in bringing this story to life and showing how caravans, and the community built around them, proved a remarkable resource in a time of need.”

Nick Lomas, Director General at the Caravan and Motorhome Club, said,

“We are proud to have the Caravan and Motorhome Club's archive collection preserved at the National Motor Museum. This invaluable resource captures the rich history of a much-loved leisure pursuit, showcasing how caravanning has evolved through the decades. By safeguarding these records, we ensure that future generations can explore and appreciate the heritage, innovation, and enduring appeal of this unique way of life.”.
