August Bank Holiday Weekend 2025: the highest spend on record
As millions gear up for the August Bank Holiday 2025 getaway, the UK is preparing for one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. But how does this year compare with 2024 and what do the latest figures reveal about UK travel trends, holiday choices, tourism spending and caravanning?

Travel disruption: tougher in 2025 than 2024
In 2024, drivers faced record traffic with the RAC predicting 19.2 million journeys. This year’s figure is slightly lower at 17.6 million trips, but conditions are set to be more challenging.
- Rail strikes and engineering works are causing severe disruption
- Weather concerns linked to recent storms may slow travel further and bring more cars to the road
- Roads remain heavily congested, particularly on popular routes such as the M5 (Bristol–Devon), the M6 through the Midlands, and the M20 in Kent
2025 August Bank Holiday spending could be the highest on record
The August Bank Holiday 2024 generated a £3.1 billion boost for the UK economy, fuelled by 11 million overnight trips. Fast-forward to 2025 and the projected figures are even stronger.
According to VisitEngland:
- 11.2 million Brits are planning overnight stays
- A record-breaking £4.1 billion is expected to flow into the tourism sector
Much of this growth is being driven by domestic travel. Instead of flying abroad, more people are choosing UK destinations, from Cornwall campsites and Devon caravan parks to Scottish Highlands retreats and Welsh coastal escapes.
This shift is a welcome boost for holiday parks, caravan sites and campsites, which are preparing for one of their busiest weekends in recent memory.

The weather for the August Bank Holiday weekend 2025 looks significantly better than 2024.
- Saturday: Cloudy in parts of the UK
- Sunday and Monday: Sunshine, highs of up to 27°C in England and Wales
