Snakes, dragons and rabbits: the rise of unusual pets on the campsite

Dogs have long been a familiar sight on caravan holidays – but it seems they’re no longer the only animal companions joining their owners on site.

According to the Caravan and Motorhome Club, a growing number of caravanners are bringing more unconventional pets with them, including reptiles, cats and even fish.

The trend appears to be growing as warmer weather boosts campsite bookings across the UK. A recent survey by Censuswide, commissioned by the Club, found that while most pet campers are still dog owners, some are taking a far more eclectic approach.

The campsite’s most unexpected guests

Among the most unusual pets spotted at Club campsites are:

  • Cats – while not traditionally thought of as travel-friendly, some owners now camp with their cats, using harnesses and leads for short walks and outdoor time
  • Bearded dragons – these reptiles are reportedly calm travellers, provided they are kept at the right temperature and diet – which includes live insects
  • Snakes – some caravanners bring snakes along, though this requires careful planning to ensure safe enclosures and regulated heating
  • Rabbits – increasingly popular, rabbits can often be seen hopping about on harnesses. As with all pets, secure transport and outdoor pens are essential
  • Fish – perhaps the most surprising addition to the list, some caravanners travel with portable aquariums, allowing them to keep their aquatic pets close by

Harvey Alexander, Director of Marketing and Membership Services at the Caravan and Motorhome Club, said,

“Our members’ dedication to their pets is good to see. We know that the majority of dog owners travel with their dogs because they are considered part of the family.

"However, it is interesting that it is not only dogs that benefit from holidays; reptiles, rabbits, cats, and other animals accompany their owners as well.

"We are delighted that many individuals are taking full advantage of their holidays with their cherished pets.”

Pet-friendly stays on the rise

The Caravan and Motorhome Club offers free stays for pets at its 200 Club campsites and 2,200 smaller Certificated Locations, where many sites now feature pet-friendly amenities, including dog walks and wash areas.

For those planning to bring more exotic animals on tour, the Club reminds owners to plan carefully and consider the needs and safety of their pets, as well as the comfort of fellow campers.

While snakes and bearded dragons might not become the norm on site any time soon, the data shows that the modern British campsite is more diverse – and animal-friendly – than ever before.
