Caravan owners warned about roof damage as temperatures rise

Protecting your caravan roof this summer
As thousands of families prepare for half-term getaways, experts are warning caravan owners to check their roofs for signs of heat-related damage – or risk expensive repairs later in the season.
But while the sun is welcoming news, it could pose a threat to the structural integrity of caravans – particularly their roofs.

Top tips
To help caravan owners look after their properties over the summer months, Kate Watts, spokesperson at Away Resorts has compiled her top tips to avoid any roof-related hazards.
Carry out regular roof inspections
Check for any signs of cracking, bubbling, or soft spots in the roof coating or material – especially after a spell of high heat. Spotting damage early can help you avoid bigger, costlier repairs.
Keep your caravan shaded where possible
If your caravan is in an exposed area, consider adding a sunshade, awning, or strategically planted trees to minimise direct sunlight hitting the roof for long periods.
Reducing direct sun exposure can lower surface temperatures significantly, helping to prolong the lifespan of roof materials.
Apply a UV-protective roof sealant
Use a weather-resistant sealant or reflective roof coating that protects against harmful UV rays.
These coatings not only deflect heat but also help prevent cracks, splits and colour fading caused by constant sun exposure.
Clean the roof regularly
Dirt and debris can trap heat and moisture, accelerating wear and tear. A clean roof reflects more sunlight and prevents the build-up of moss or grime that can hold moisture and weaken the surface.
Watch for signs of warping or sagging
High temperatures can warp the roof, especially in caravans that have not been consistently maintained.
This may affect drainage and insulation, or even signal a more serious issue with the roof’s internal support structure.
Check roof vents and seals
Ensure the roof vents are properly sealed and not allowing hot air or moisture into the structure.
Inspecting rubber seals regularly is a must, as extreme temperatures can cause them to shrink, crack, or detach over time.
Invest in roof insulation
Improved roof insulation doesn’t just keep your caravan cooler during the warmer months – it can also protect the roof materials from experiencing extreme temperature shifts.
Insulation acts as a thermal buffer, reducing the expansion and contraction of the roof that can cause cracking and structural stress.
