Bailey to set off on Sahara Challenge

abbf59e7-3e1a-4ff4-aea2-4a71df8cf8af

British motorhome and caravan manufacturer, Bailey of Bristol, will be setting off on an intercontinental caravan and motorhome adventure this month

The Sahara Challenge, in association with the Caravan and Motorhome Club, is a 2,735-mile, 19-day journey, starting at the World’s End in southwest Portugal, heading through Spain and across the Strait of Gibraltar into Morocco, before heading across the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara Desert, and then returning home.

The Sahara Challenge team – including Bailey’s Marketing Director, Simon Howard; Director General of the Caravan and Motorhome Club, Nick Lomas; freelance journalist, Lee Davey; outdoor adventurer, Andy Torbet; and adventure athlete, Marcus Leach – will be joined by various media representatives and influencers throughout the journey, including our very own Road Test Editor and Editor of What Motorhome, Peter Vaughan, and Campervan magazine's new columnist and Life Beyond Bricks YouTuber, Tash Gooch.

The team will travel in two Bailey Phoenix+ 642 caravans, pulled by Ford Ranger MS-RT tow vehicles, and one Ford-based Bailey Adamo 75-4T motorhome.

This is the manufacturer’s second attempt at this particular challenge, with the first halted for safety reasons in March 2020. It is, however, the fourth long-distance endurance test undertaken by Bailey in recent years.

The manufacturer successfully completed the West to East Challenge in 2015 – a 3,500-mile journey across Australia with two Bailey Alu-Tech caravans, followed by a 5,000-mile Arctic Adventure in 2017 and the Bristol to Bosphorus challenge in 2018 – a 5,000-mile, 21-country journey from the UK to Istanbul and back again.

Bailey's Marketing Director, Simon Howard, says,

Since the introduction of our Alu-Tech construction system over 10 years ago, we have continued to put our leisure vehicles through their paces both on the proving grounds and cold chambers, as well as on a series of real-life tests across the globe.

With international travel restrictions gradually being removed, this 19-day adventure will also hopefully show that you are really only limited by your imagination as to where a caravan or motorhome can take you, and that we love using our vehicles as much as our customers do.
