Lunar Clubman ES, 2008

Price new: £15,795

This caravan is a: four-berth with an end washroom

The Lunar Clubman range seems to have been around since Adam was a boy. It has proved to be extremely popular with dedicated caravanners – not the least ralliers – who want a caravan which can take everything that rutted roads, tracks, and muddy fields can throw at it.
Although Lunar has been in the mainstream of caravan manufacturers for as long as I can remember, it isn’t in the same league as the big three – Swift, Bailey, and Explorer – when it comes to the number of units it produces each year. Nonetheless, it has built up its own band of followers – especially when it comes to the Clubman range.
So I was more than pleased to have the opportunity to give the 2008 four-berth Clubman ES a thorough inspection. It’s one of three Clubmans in this year’s range, the other two being the two-berth Clubman 475 CK and the four-berth fixed bed Clubman EB.
The ES has a fairly conventional layout, with two bench seats in the front lounge, a centre kitchen, two seat dinette opposite on the offside and a rear end washroom. The bench seats are designated as either two singles or a double bed at night, whilst the two seat dinette with its wall mounted folding bunk becomes two single beds.

Our verdict
Having had a chance to spend time in the Clubman ES I can understand why the marque has been so popular with caravanners over the years.
Although there is very little new to get excited about, it is a worthy successor to the line and will continue to enhance the company’s reputation for producing caravans that are built to last.
If there is a downside, it’s the three year factory-backed warranty. Other manufacturers also offer this, but in addition offer six years cover against water ingress and delamination. It’s difficult to understand why Lunar doesn’t do the same.
