Top European campsites named in club awards

d65169f0-61a0-4631-9a30-e4f181fd75bb

In the annual Campsite Awards, the Caravan and Motorhome Club and Alan Rogers have recognised 11 campsites across Europe. The winners were announced at the Vakantiebeurs travel and tourism fair in Utrecht in January 2020.

The awards take into account comments from campsite assessors and the head office team, as well as club members and club magazine readers, recognising campsites for their progress, friendliness and innovation.

The winners are:

Camping Château de Chanteloup, France: Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite of the Year

Near Le Mans in France, this family-run campsite is set in the grounds of a nineteenth-century chateau. It has a pool, bar/restaurant and a small fishing lake. Tours of the grounds on pony and trap can be arranged.

Camping Turiscampo, Portugal: Alan Rogers Campsite of the Year

This fully equipped site has an indoor heated pool, gym, sauna, hammam and beauty treatments (an extra fee applies for use of the gym and spa facilities). An outdoor swimming pool complex is surrounded by a terrace with bar, while the restaurant offers snacks or full a la carte and more. The pretty seaside village of Luz is well worth a trip and Lagos and Sagres can both easily be reached by a bus that stops just outside the campsite.

Camping Le Pin Parasol, France: Progress Award

A large campsite overlooking Jaunay Lake in the Vendée. The recent addition of two specific zones (one for families with a play area and one that is more relaxed), plus a new indoor and outdoor swimming pool and a new restaurant, was the key reason it was named this year.

The runner up was Huttopia Chardons Bleus on the Il de Ré in France.

Eifel Camp, Germany: Welcome Award

Located next to Lake Freilingen near Eifel National Park, Club members have frequently commented on the genuinely warm welcome that is provided by the multilingual staff, and the excellent advice they offer on how to get the best out of their holiday. The famous Nürburgring is just a short drive through the forest.

The runner up was Camping Au Clos de la Charme in France.

Camping Fornella, Italy: Dog Friendly Award

On the shores of Lake Garda, this campsite has a beach where dogs are welcome, with dog showers and an area where dogs can run free, off their leads. The website shows all the four-legged guest amenities on site.

The runner up was Camp Kovacine in Croatia.

Les Criques de Porteils, France: Seaside Award

A dramatic clifftop location overlooking the Mediterranean, there is also direct access to private beaches and secluded coves (steep in places and not recommended for those requiring accessible facilities). There's a watersports centre where you can hire kayaks and paddleboards as well as a swimming pool complex and restaurant.

The runner up was Camping Zaton Holiday Resort in Croatia.

Resort de Arendshorst, Netherlands: Country Award

Set in a tranquil nature reserve, this campsite has generous pitches arranged around large fields. There's a children's petting farm, too.

The runner up was Camping Peña Montañesa in Spain.

Vilanova Park, Spain: All Year Award

A large campsite located between Barcelona and Tarragona, reception is open 24 hours a day with a multilingual team. There's a pool complex, wellness centre and Catalan restaurant, as well as various social activities.

The runner up is Camping Caravaning La Manga, also in Spain.

Domaine de Massereau, France: Family Award

Highlights include a swimming pool complex, horse riding, mountain biking and a vast adventure park with 18 circuits and 50 zip wires. The campsite’s children’s club is very popular and a major new aqua park is currently being built.

The runner up was Camping de Paal in the Netherlands.

Domaine des Mathevies, France: Small Campsite Award

This 52-pitch Dordogne site offers a swimming pool and cafe bar and is just 15 minutes from Sarlat-la-Canéda.

The runner up was La Valle Agricampeggio in Italy.

Camping Les Saules: Environmental Award

In the heart of the Loire, this campsite's owner has focussed on sustainability. There's a new eco-sanity block. There are bee hives on site, from which honey is given to guests, while over 50 species of birds have been spotted on the nature and fitness trail.

The runner up is Camping Grubhof in Austria.
