Survey finds Cornwall tops for holidays at home

Cornwall, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands have been named as the most desirable staycation destinations in the UK for this summer, according to new survey of UK holidaymakers. Staycation holidays are tipped for another boom year following a 7 per cent rise to a bumper 105m trips made last year. The growing demand for leisure vehicles has contributed to the popularity of taking a break in the British Isles, with over a quarter of Brits choosing this as their preferred accommodation and travel option.

According to the survey of 2,000 UK adults, conducted by campervan and motorhome insurer, comfort-insurance.co.uk, Cornwall (31%) took first place for the most popular destination, followed by the Lake District (17%) and the Scottish Highlands (12%) – in second and third places respectively. Known for its miles of golden sandy beaches, and dubbed as the Cornish Rivera, Cornwall has emerged as a hotspot for relaxed, independent fun in the sun.

The findings reveal the top five most desirable UK destinations are:

  • Cornwall
  • Lake District
  • Scottish Highlands
  • Yorkshire Dales
  • Norfolk Broads

When asked which type of accommodation they prefer for a staycation getaway, 27 per cent of Brits chose a leisure vehicle over a hotel option. Campervanning and caravanning is synonymous with staycationning and these type of holidays continues to grow year-on-year with leisure vehicle sales increasing by 10%.

The lure and freedom of the open road is the key attraction driving this boom trend. More than half (54%) of respondents said the freedom to discover new treasures off-the-beaten track make caravanning and campervanning a compelling choice. If there was any doubt about Brits being soppy about their pets, then the findings show how contrary this is with a whopping 23% saying holidays on wheels were great because they could take the dog along beside.

Pete Cue, founder and Director of comfort-insurance.co.uk commented, “It’s no wonder leisure vehicles continue to be so popular with staycation holidays. Leisure vehicle ownership continues to rise year-on-year and isn’t showing any signs of slipping up. They offer the freedom and flexibility to explore hidden gems in the UK, whenever you want. Not only that, but you can take your furry friend to enjoy the ride.”
